Player vs Player (PvP)
Where you discover that other players are significantly more dangerous than forest creatures
What is PvP?
Player vs Player (PvP) combat allows you to attack other players for gold, experience, and the sheer joy of ruining someone's day. It's accessed through the Dueling Club in the village, where you can view a list of potential victims and challenge them to combat. Unlike forest fights, PvP has special rules, no running away, and significantly more potential for drama.
PvP is entirely optional - you can play HogwartsLive without ever attacking another player. However, some features (like Horcruxes) require PvP participation, and it can be a lucrative source of gold and experience if you're good at it.
How PvP Works
PvP Combat Rules:
- No Running: Your pride prevents you from fleeing. You fight until someone wins.
- No Special Abilities: Your honor prevents you from using skills or special attacks.
- Limited Buffs: Most buffs are suspended unless specifically marked "allowinpvp".
- Limited Companions: Most companions don't help unless marked "allowinpvp".
- No Critical Hits: The 3x attack multiplier from forest combat doesn't apply.
- Player Fights: You have a limited number of PvP attacks per day (default varies).
Essentially, PvP is a more "fair" fight than forest combat. It's you vs. them, with minimal external advantages. Victory depends on your level, equipment, and base stats more than buffs or tricks.
PvP Immunity
New players are protected from PvP attacks for their first 5 game days OR until they reach 800 experience OR until they attack another player (whichever comes first). This gives you time to learn the game without being murdered by high-level players.
Warning: Once you attack another player, you permanently lose PvP immunity for that VE cycle. You'll be vulnerable to attacks from other players until your next Voldemort Encounter. Choose your first attack wisely!
Some servers also have a PvP Immunity module that allows players to opt out of PvP entirely. If you enable this, you cannot attack or be attacked, but you also cannot gain any benefits from PvP (including Horcruxes, PvP-related items, etc.). This setting can only be changed once per VE cycle.
Rewards and Penalties
If You Win
- Gold: Calculated based on victim's level and gold on hand (not their full amount)
- Experience: Based on victim's experience (capped at 5000 XP)
- Alignment Change: Killing good players makes you evil, killing evil players makes you good
- Horcrux Progress: If evil-aligned, killing players counts toward creating Horcruxes
- Bragging Rights: Your victory is announced in the news
If You Lose
- Death: You die and go to the graveyard
- Gold Loss: Lose ALL gold on hand (bank is safe)
- Experience Loss: Lose 15% of your experience
- Public Humiliation: Your defeat is announced in the news
- Victim Gets Rewarded: They get gold and XP based on your stats
CRITICAL: Always deposit your gold before engaging in PvP! Whether you're attacking or just vulnerable to attacks, you risk losing all gold on hand if you die. The bank is your friend.
Who Can You Attack?
The PvP list shows players who are:
- Offline: You can only attack players who are not currently logged in
- Alive: Dead players in the graveyard have their own PvP system
- In Your Location: Usually limited to players in the same village/area
- Not PvP Immune: Players with immunity don't appear on the list
- Within Level Range: Some servers restrict attacking players far above/below your level
PvP Strategy
Smart PvP Tactics:
- Target Wisely: Attack players at or below your level. Higher-level players will destroy you.
- Check Their Stats: The PvP list shows level and other info. Avoid heavily-equipped players.
- Deposit Gold First: Always. Every time. No exceptions.
- Be at Full HP: Heal before attacking. You can't run if things go badly.
- Update Equipment: PvP is gear-dependent. Buy the best weapon/armor you can afford.
- Consider Alignment: Killing good players makes you evil, which affects other game systems.
- Save PvP Fights: Don't waste all your PvP attacks on low-value targets.
Alignment and PvP
PvP affects your alignment (good/neutral/evil status):
- Kill Good Player: -10 alignment (become more evil)
- Kill Evil Player: +10 alignment (become more good)
- Kill Neutral Player (if evil): -5 alignment (become more evil)
This creates interesting strategic choices. If you want to create Horcruxes (requires evil alignment), you need to kill good players. If you want to maintain good alignment, you should only attack evil players.
Horcruxes and PvP
If you're evil-aligned (alignment ≤ 33), killing players in PvP counts toward creating Horcruxes. After 5 sequential PvP kills, you create a Horcrux that can save you from death once. This is the primary reason many players engage in PvP.
See the Horcrux guide for full details.
Inn PvP
Some locations (like the Inn) allow you to attack players who are "sleeping" in their rooms. This is sneakier than regular PvP and may have different rules or rewards.
Should You Engage in PvP?
PvP is optional, but it offers unique benefits:
Reasons to PvP
- Create Horcruxes (cheat death)
- Earn gold and experience
- Affect your alignment
- Compete with other players
- Access PvP-exclusive content
Reasons to Avoid PvP
- Risk of losing gold/experience
- Makes you vulnerable to attacks
- Can create player drama
- Requires good equipment
- Not necessary for progression
Ultimately, PvP is a personal choice. Some players love it, some avoid it entirely. Both approaches are valid.
