Alignment System
Understanding the moral compass of HogwartsLive - are you Good, Neutral, or Evil?
What is Alignment?
In the grand tradition of moral philosophy (and video games that let you be a complete bastard if you want), HogwartsLive tracks your character's alignment. Think of it as your moral credit score, except instead of determining whether you can get a mortgage, it determines whether you're allowed to create Horcruxes and generally be a menace to society.
Your alignment is displayed on your character stats page and can be one of three states:
Good (66+)
You're a paragon of virtue, a beacon of hope, and probably insufferably smug about it. Good-aligned characters have helped others, defeated evil creatures, and generally made the world a better place.
Neutral (34-65)
You're Switzerland. You're that person who says "I can see both sides" in every argument. Neutral characters haven't committed to being particularly good or evil, which is either admirably balanced or disappointingly fence-sitting, depending on your perspective.
Evil (0-33)
You've embraced the dark side. You kick puppies, steal candy from babies, and probably enjoy pineapple on pizza. Evil-aligned characters can create Horcruxes and engage in other morally questionable activities that good characters can't.
How to Gain Alignment (Become More Good)
If you want to be one of the good guys (or at least pretend to be), here's how to increase your alignment:
- Defeat Evil Creatures: Some forest creatures are configured to give you alignment points when you defeat them. Check the creature's settings to see if it affects alignment.
- Help People in Random Events: The Alignment Events module presents you with moral choices in the forest. Choose to help people instead of hindering them.
- Kill Evil Players in PvP: If PvP alignment is enabled, defeating evil-aligned players will make you more good (+10 alignment).
- Own a Good-Aligned Mount: Some mounts affect your alignment at newday. If you have a mount configured with positive alignment, it will slowly shift you toward good.
How to Lose Alignment (Become More Evil)
If you want to walk the dark path (and unlock those sweet Horcrux features), here's how to decrease your alignment:
- Hinder People in Random Events: When the Alignment Events module gives you a choice, choose to hinder or harm people instead of helping them.
- Kill Good Players in PvP: If PvP alignment is enabled, defeating good-aligned players will make you more evil (-10 alignment).
- Kill Neutral Players (if you're evil): Killing neutral players when you're already evil makes you even more evil (-5 alignment).
- Own an Evil-Aligned Mount: Some mounts affect your alignment at newday. If you have a mount configured with negative alignment, it will slowly shift you toward evil.
Alignment Limits
. If you go over or under these limits, your alignment will be reset to the maximum or minimum value at newday (if the reset setting is enabled).
Pro Tip: Your alignment number is displayed next to your alignment status if you look at your character stats. This lets you see exactly where you stand on the good-evil spectrum.
Why Alignment Matters
Alignment isn't just for show. It affects several game systems:
- Horcrux Creation: You must be evil-aligned to create Horcruxes and engage in dark magic.
- PvP Interactions: Your alignment affects how much alignment you gain or lose when fighting other players.
- Random Events: Some forest events and encounters may behave differently based on your alignment.
- Roleplay: Your alignment is visible to other players and affects how they perceive your character.
Changing Your Alignment
Alignment changes gradually through your actions. There's no quick way to flip from good to evil or vice versa - you have to earn it through consistent behavior. This prevents players from gaming the system by rapidly switching alignments to access different features.
If you're trying to change your alignment, be patient and consistent. Make the same moral choices repeatedly, and your alignment will shift over time.
Warning: Some actions (like creating Horcruxes) require you to maintain an evil alignment. If you create a Horcrux and then become good-aligned, you may lose access to certain dark magic features.
