Horcrux System

How to cheat death by murdering people and splitting your soul (totally normal wizard stuff)

What is a Horcrux?

A Horcrux is a dark magical object that contains a piece of your soul, created through the act of murder. In HogwartsLive, Horcruxes serve as a "get out of death free" card - when you die, a Horcrux automatically resurrects you with 1 HP, then is destroyed. It's the ultimate insurance policy for players who engage in risky behavior (or just really hate visiting the graveyard).

Creating Horcruxes requires evil alignment and consistent PvP kills, making them a reward for dedicated dark wizards. You can have multiple Horcruxes (default maximum: 10), each providing one resurrection.

Requirements to Create Horcruxes

Horcrux Requirements:

  • Evil Alignment: Your alignment must be ≤ 33 (evil-aligned)
  • 5 Sequential PvP Kills: Kill 5 players in a row without dying
  • Alignment Cost: Lose 100 alignment points per Horcrux created
  • Maximum Limit: Can have up to 10 Horcruxes (default setting)

The alignment requirement means you must be actively evil to create Horcruxes. If you're good or neutral, you'll need to lower your alignment first by killing good players in PvP, hindering people in random events, or owning evil-aligned mounts.

How to Create a Horcrux

The Horcrux Creation Process:

  1. Become Evil: Lower your alignment to 33 or below (see Alignment guide)
  2. Engage in PvP: Attack and kill other players in the Dueling Club
  3. Kill 5 Players: You must kill 5 players in a row without dying yourself
  4. Automatic Creation: On your 5th kill, a Horcrux is automatically created
  5. Alignment Loss: You lose 100 alignment points (become more evil)
  6. Repeat: Kill 5 more players to create another Horcrux (up to 10 total)

Important: The kills must be sequential. If you die before reaching 5 kills, your counter resets to 0 and you have to start over. This makes Horcrux creation challenging and requires consistent PvP success.

How Horcruxes Work

Once you have a Horcrux, it provides automatic death protection:

  • Automatic Activation: When you die, the Horcrux triggers automatically (no choice required)
  • Instant Resurrection: You're immediately resurrected with 1 HP (no graveyard visit)
  • Horcrux Destroyed: The Horcrux is consumed and removed from your count
  • No Death Penalties: You don't lose gold or experience (the Horcrux prevents death entirely)
  • Multiple Uses: Each Horcrux provides one resurrection, so 10 Horcruxes = 10 lives

Pro Tip: Horcruxes are the BEST resurrection method in the game. Unlike Bellatrix resurrection (which costs 100 favor and gives -6 forest fights), Horcruxes have no penalty beyond being consumed. They're essentially free extra lives.

Strategic Considerations

Benefits of Horcruxes

  • Cheat death with no penalties
  • Take more risks in combat
  • Protect against PvP deaths
  • Save time (no graveyard waiting)
  • Multiple lives (up to 10)

Costs of Horcruxes

  • Must be evil-aligned
  • Requires PvP participation
  • Lose 100 alignment per Horcrux
  • Must kill 5 players per Horcrux
  • Makes you a PvP target

Maintaining Evil Alignment

To create and use Horcruxes, you must maintain evil alignment (≤ 33). This means:

  • Kill Good Players: Each good player killed in PvP lowers your alignment by 10
  • Hinder in Events: Choose evil options in random forest events
  • Evil Mounts: Own mounts with negative alignment modifiers
  • Avoid Good Actions: Don't kill evil players or help people in events

Creating a Horcrux itself lowers your alignment by 100, which helps keep you evil. However, if you accidentally become good-aligned, you won't be able to create new Horcruxes (though existing ones still work).

Horcrux Counter

If you're evil-aligned, your character stats will display your current Horcrux count under "Equipment Info." This shows how many Horcruxes you currently have available. The count decreases by 1 each time a Horcrux saves you from death.

PvP Strategy for Horcrux Creation

How to Farm Horcruxes:

  • Target Weak Players: Attack players at or below your level to ensure wins
  • Update Equipment: Buy the best gear to maximize PvP success
  • Deposit Gold: Always bank your gold before PvP (dying resets your kill counter)
  • Be at Full HP: Heal before each PvP attack
  • Track Your Progress: Remember how many kills you have toward your next Horcrux
  • Avoid Risky Fights: Don't attack strong players while building your kill streak

Horcrux Lore

In Harry Potter canon, Horcruxes are the darkest form of magic, created by murdering someone and using the act to split your soul. Voldemort created 7 Horcruxes (including Harry Potter accidentally), making him nearly immortal. The process is described as "evil, the evilest thing possible" and requires a specific dark ritual.

In HogwartsLive, the system is simplified: kill 5 players while evil-aligned, and you automatically create a Horcrux. The game doesn't specify what object contains your soul fragment, but presumably it's something suitably dramatic.

Moral Note: Horcruxes require you to kill other players, which may create drama or make you unpopular. Some players view Horcrux farmers as griefers. Be prepared for potential retaliation and social consequences. That said, it's a legitimate game mechanic, so don't feel bad about using it.
