Ever wish you could step into the wizarding world of Harry Potter? Still waiting for your Hogwarts letter? We all are. Hogwarts Live is what happens when you give up waiting — a free, persistent, text-based multiplayer RPG running since 2004. This is either very impressive or mildly concerning depending on how you feel about commitment.
It doesn't require a download, an expensive computer, or the sale of your soul — we double-checked that last one. The game is set in a loose parody of J.K. Rowling's wizarding world, loose enough to wave at the lawyers from a safe distance. You create a character, get sorted by a Hat that has seen things, attend classes, venture into the Forbidden Forest to fight creatures, and eventually work your way up to facing Lord Voldemort himself. Then you face him again. And again. Your Voldemort Encounter count is the number that actually matters. Players with 50 or more encounters are considered tenured Hogwarts professors, which means the Headmaster can never expel you, which is its own kind of victory.
Let's be clear: this is not a high-budget MMORPG with ultra-HD graphics and ray-traced spellcasting. It's a text-based, browser-based adventure that requires you to use your imagination — which we realize is a big ask in an age where people can't get through a 20-second TikTok. It is also fully accessible to screen readers and visually impaired players.
There are 12 game days per real-world day. Each new day restores your hitpoints, gives you forest fight turns, and lets you challenge your professor for another level. Unused turns disappear at the new day like a poorly-brewed Cinderella potion. Budget accordingly.
The Forbidden Forest is where experience and gold live. Creatures range from manageable to deeply unpleasant. You spend turns fighting them. Die and you lose all your gold and some experience. The Graveyard awaits, where death has been reclassified as an indefinite detention: you correct truant students to earn enough favor from Dolores Umbridge to petition for early release — death, the handbook is keen to stress, in pink, underlined, is no excuse to skip class — or simply wait for the next new day and let the universe sort it out. Both are valid strategies.
Beyond the forest: spells to master across charms, transfiguration, and the Dark Arts; Quidditch league play with actual standings; Diagon Alley shops where galleons evaporate with suspicious speed; clubs to join or found; marriages to arrange; Voldemort Encounters spanning all seven years of Hogwarts; crossovers with Twilight, The Princess Bride, Monty Python, and at least one encounter nobody has ever been able to explain; and a forum full of people who have been here longer than they planned.
Students who never log in get expelled after 10 days. Students who don't reach second year within 30 days face expulsion. Students absent for 120+ days are removed. Alumni (50+ VEs) are exempt from all of this because they've clearly earned it.
One more thing: Hogwarts Live is a fan-made parody — not official, not endorsed by Warner Bros., and definitely not something J.K. Rowling signed off on. It's a satirical work meant for entertainment, and should not be confused with official Harry Potter games, books, or films.
Twenty-Two years of a game that was never supposed to last this long. It did anyway. Ever wish you could step into Hermione's shoes? Now you can. Free forever. No download. Just magic. Your letter arrived.
