Mountain Trolls
The playable race for people who think being ugly and stupid is a valid character build
What Are Mountain Trolls?
Mountain Trolls are a playable race in HogwartsLive, available to experienced players (25+ Voldemort Encounters by default). They're large, dim-witted creatures with enormous strength and the kind of personal hygiene that makes Hagrid look positively fastidious by comparison. If you've ever looked at the standard wizard character and thought "this is too smart and too attractive," then Mountain Trolls are the race for you.
In the Harry Potter universe, trolls are generally considered to be among the stupidest creatures in existence, which is saying something in a world that includes Flobberworms. They're typically used as muscle by dark wizards or as living obstacles in dungeons. In HogwartsLive, you can actually play as one, which raises interesting questions about game balance and your decision-making skills.
Mountain Troll Racial Abilities
Racial Bonuses:
- Increased Strength: Trolls hit harder than other races - their massive clubs aren't just for show
- High HP: More hitpoints to compensate for their general inability to avoid danger
- Troll Habitat: Access to a special location called "Forbidden Forest Depths"
- Natural Weapons: Trolls start with racial bonuses that make them formidable in combat
Racial Penalties:
- Charm Penalty: -5 charm (default) - trolls are quite hideous
- Mine Death Chance: 90% chance (default) to die in goldmines - trolls are not known for their mining safety protocols
- Social Stigma: Other races may treat you differently, and not in a good way
- Intelligence Roleplay: If you're roleplaying correctly, your troll should not be solving complex puzzles or writing poetry
Requirements to Play Mountain Troll
Mountain Trolls are not available to beginning players, presumably because the game developers wanted new players to have at least a passing familiarity with basic game mechanics before playing a character with the intelligence of a particularly dim brick.
- Minimum VEs: 25 Voldemort Encounters (default setting)
- Race Change: Available through the normal race selection process
- Permanent Choice: Once you choose Mountain Troll, you're a troll until your next Voldemort Encounter
The Forbidden Forest Depths
Mountain Trolls have access to a special location called the "Forbidden Forest Depths," which is essentially their racial home city. It's like Hogwarts, except everything smells worse and the architecture is "early Neolithic with aggressive cave motifs."
Features of the Forbidden Forest Depths:
- Separate Location: Functions as a distinct city with its own chat/commentary
- Troll-Specific NPCs: Shopkeepers and services adapted for troll clientele
- Travel: Can travel to other locations like Hogwarts (if Cities module is active)
- Forest Access: Direct access to forest hunting, because trolls do enjoy smashing things
Troll in the Dungeon Event
If you're NOT playing a Mountain Troll, you might encounter the "Troll in the Dungeon" random travel event. This is a special encounter that triggers when traveling to or from troll-related locations.
How the Event Works:
- Troll Recognition: If you're a troll, the dungeon troll recognizes you and lets you pass peacefully
- Wizard Fear: If you're a wizard with a wand, the troll is intimidated and backs down
- House Elf Attack: If you're a house elf, the troll attacks on sight (trolls hate house elves, apparently)
- Combat or Escape: You can fight the troll or try to run away
It's a nice bit of racial interaction that makes the world feel more alive, even if that life involves being threatened by a twelve-foot-tall creature with the IQ of a doorknob.
Strategy & Roleplay
Playing a Mountain Troll
- Combat Build: Trolls excel at physical combat - lean into the strength bonuses
- Avoid Goldmines: With a 90% death chance, mining is basically suicide for trolls
- Charm Doesn't Matter: You're already at -5 charm, so don't worry about it
- Roleplay Appropriately: Trolls aren't known for eloquent speeches or clever strategies
- Use the Habitat: The Forbidden Forest Depths gives you a unique base of operations
- Late Game Option: Best for experienced players who want to try something different
The Lore
Trolls in the Harry Potter universe are magical creatures known for their immense strength and corresponding lack of intelligence. They stand around twelve feet tall, possess incredible durability, and smell like a combination of rotten meat and public toilets that haven't been cleaned since the Triwizard Tournament.
The most famous troll encounter in the series occurs in the first book, when Professor Quirrell (secretly harboring Voldemort) releases a mountain troll in the dungeons as a distraction. Harry and Ron defeat it by dropping its own club on its head, which tells you everything you need to know about troll intelligence - they're susceptible to their own weapons.
Trolls come in several varieties: mountain trolls (the largest), forest trolls, and river trolls. Mountain trolls are considered the most dangerous, not because they're smarter (they're not), but because they're bigger and angrier. Some trolls can be trained to perform simple tasks, though "simple" in this context means "smashing specific things on command" rather than "filing paperwork."
Module Info: Both modules work together to create a cohesive troll experience, which is to say, an experience involving large clubs and questionable decision-making.
