The Forbidden Forest
Where wizards go to get mauled by magical creatures for fun and profit
What is the Forbidden Forest?
The Forbidden Forest is where you'll spend most of your time in HogwartsLive, which says something rather concerning about the school's safety standards. It's called "Forbidden" because students aren't supposed to go there, but since you're actively encouraged to wander in and fight things, we can safely assume that particular rule has been. relaxed.
This is the primary location for:
- Combat: Fight creatures to gain experience, gold, and forest fights
- Leveling: Earn experience to level up and become stronger
- Gold Farming: Defeat creatures to collect gold (which you should immediately deposit at Gringotts)
- Random Events: Encounter special events, NPCs, and storylines
- Voldemort Encounters: When you're ready, face the Dark Lord himself
How to Enter the Forest
From the village (Hogwarts, Hogsmeade, Diagon Alley, etc.), click on "Forbidden Forest" in the navigation. You'll be presented with several options for how aggressively you want to court death:
Look for Something to Kill
The standard option. Finds creatures at or near your level. This is what you'll use 99% of the time. It's the Goldilocks option: not too easy, not too hard, just right for steady progression.
Go Slumming
Fight creatures below your level. Less experience and gold, but much safer. Good for when you're low on HP or just want to farm some easy wins. Available at level 2+.
Go Thrillseeking
Fight creatures above your level. More experience and gold, but significantly more dangerous. For when you're feeling confident (or reckless).
Search Suicidally
Fight creatures WAY above your level. This is for masochists and people who enjoy visiting the graveyard. Only available after a certain number of VEs. The name is not an exaggeration.
Forest Fights
You have a limited number of forest fights per day (default is 10, but this can be Each time you search for a creature, you use one forest fight. When you run out, you can't hunt anymore until the next newday.
Pro Tip: Some modules and items can give you extra forest fights. Phoenixes, certain buffs, and donator perks can all increase your daily forest fight count.
What Happens in the Forest
When you search for a creature, one of several things can happen:
- Normal Combat: You encounter a creature and fight it. See the Combat System guide for details.
- Random Events: Special encounters like finding gold, meeting NPCs, or triggering module-specific events.
- Forest Specials: Unique storylines and encounters - Centaurs, Aragog, Death Eaters, and more.
- Nothing: Sometimes you just wander around and find nothing. It happens.
Healing in the Forest
Hagrid's Hut is located in the forest and allows you to heal between fights. The cost scales with your level and max HP, but it's always cheaper than dying. Visit Hagrid frequently - he won't judge you for being a coward who heals between fights.
Voldemort Encounters (VE)
When you're strong enough (level 15), you can attempt to face Voldemort. This is accessed through the forest by clicking "Enter the Chamber beneath Hogwarts" (after completing all challenges for your current year). Defeating Voldemort grants you a Voldemort Encounter (VE), which is the primary progression metric in HogwartsLive.
Each VE makes you stronger, unlocks new content, and cycles you through different year-specific storylines based on the Harry Potter books. See the Voldemort Encounters guide for full details.
Forest Strategy
Optimal Forest Routine:
- Deposit all gold at Gringotts Bank before entering the forest
- Search for creatures at your level ("Look for Something to Kill")
- Fight until your HP gets low (around 30-40%)
- Heal at Hagrid's Hut
- Repeat until you run out of forest fights
- Return to village and deposit any gold you earned
Warning: ALWAYS deposit your gold before going into the forest! If you die, you lose ALL gold on hand. Gold in the bank is safe. This is the #1 newbie mistake. Don't be that person.
