Weapons & Wands
A comprehensive guide to the 750+ different ways to inflict violence upon your enemies, wizard-style.
The Wand Chooses the Wizard: Or in this case, the wizard chooses the wand based on which one has the highest damage rating and fits their budget. It's less poetic, but more practical.
What Are Weapons?
Weapons are magical implements that increase your attack power, making it easier to hit enemies and deal damage. In the wizarding world, this primarily means wands, though the term "weapon" is used loosely to include anything you can use to make your opponent regret their life choices.
Hogwarts Live features 750+ different weapons available from Ollivander's Wand Shop, ranging from basic training wands to legendary artifacts that could probably level a small village if used incorrectly.
How Weapons Work
Each weapon has three key attributes:
- Damage Rating (1-15): How much hurt you can inflict. Higher numbers mean more pain for your enemies.
- VE Requirement: How many Voldemort Encounters you need before you can wield it. Powerful wands require experienced wizards, because giving a Level 1 student a weapon of mass destruction would be irresponsible.
- Cost: How much gold Ollivander will demand in exchange for the privilege of owning his finest work.
Weapon Progression
As you progress through the game and accumulate Voldemort Encounters, you'll unlock access to increasingly powerful weapons. The typical progression looks like this:
🪄 Starter Wands (VE 0-2)
Basic wands for beginners. Damage ratings of 1-3. They'll get the job done, but don't expect to impress anyone. Think of them as training wheels for wizards.
✨ Intermediate Wands (VE 3-6)
Solid, reliable wands. Damage ratings of 4-8. These are the workhorses of the wizarding world. Not flashy, but they'll serve you well in most situations.
⚡ Advanced Wands (VE 7-10)
Powerful magical implements. Damage ratings of 9-12. Now you're wielding serious firepower. Your enemies will start to take you seriously, assuming they survive long enough.
🌟 Legendary Wands (VE 11+)
The Elder Wand wishes it was this good. Damage ratings of 13-15. These are the wands that legends are made of. Wield them with pride and responsibility. Mostly pride, though.
Buying Weapons
To purchase a weapon, visit Ollivander's Wand Shop in Diagon Alley. Mr. Ollivander will show you all available wands that match your current VE level. You can't buy weapons above your VE requirement, because apparently wands have standards about who gets to wield them.
When selecting a weapon, consider:
- Damage vs. Cost: Higher damage is always better, but it costs more gold. Find the balance between "effective" and "affordable."
- VE Requirements: Don't buy a weapon you'll outgrow in one VE. Plan ahead and invest in weapons that will last.
- Combat Style: If you're struggling in fights, prioritize weapon upgrades. If you're winning easily, maybe save your gold for armor or other upgrades.
Example Weapons
Here are some example weapons available at different VE levels. There are 750+ total weapons in the game, with damage ratings from 1 to 15. Visit Ollivander's Wand Shop in Diagon Alley to see what's available for your current VE level.
| Weapon Name | Damage | VE Required | Cost (Gold) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Broken Wand | 1 | 0 | 48 |
| Holly and Phoenix Feather Wand | 5 | 3 | 990 |
| Blackthorn Wand | 10 | 7 | 5,040 |
| The Elder Wand | 15 | 12 | 10,350 |
Note: These are just examples. The game contains 750+ unique weapons with varying damage ratings and costs. Weapon availability is based on your VE count.
Important: One Weapon at a Time
You can only wield one weapon at a time. You can't dual-wield wands like some kind of magical gunslinger. It's been tried. It ended poorly. Don't ask.
Weapon Strategy
The optimal strategy is to upgrade your weapon every 2-3 Voldemort Encounters to keep pace with increasingly difficult enemies. A good weapon can make the difference between "easy victory" and "humiliating defeat," so don't neglect this aspect of your character development.
Balance your spending between weapons and armor. A powerful weapon won't help if you die before you can use it, and strong armor won't help if you can't deal enough damage to win fights. It's all about equilibrium.
