Voldemort's Hideout
A mobile lair for a wizard who takes 'work from home' to extremes
What Is Voldemort's Hideout?
Voldemort's Hideout is a special location system that makes finding He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named significantly more challenging than simply checking the "Dark Lord" section of the Yellow Pages. Instead of staying in one place like a reasonable boss encounter, Voldemort randomly relocates his hideout across different cities and locations, forcing players to search for him each day.
This is entirely in character for Voldemort, who was paranoid about security even when he had a functioning nose. The hideout changes location periodically (default: daily), and finding it becomes progressively more difficult as your Voldemort Encounter count increases. Because nothing says "end-game content" quite like hide-and-seek with a genocidal wizard.
How It Works
The Search System:
Finding Voldemort's hideout requires active searching:
- Daily Searches: You have a limited number of searches per day (default: 1)
- Random Locations: The hideout could be in any city/location enabled on your server
- Relocation: Voldemort moves to a new hideout periodically (default: 100% chance on new day)
- Progressive Difficulty: At VE 7+ (default), finding the hideout becomes harder
- Failed Searches Count: Even finding an empty hideout counts as "seeing Voldemort" (configurable)
What Happens When You Search:
- 1. You find an empty hideout: Voldemort was here but moved. You might find gold/gems/lose HP (configurable rewards)
- 2. You find Voldemort's current hideout: Access to VE challenges! This is what you want.
- 3. You run away to the Three Broomsticks: Sometimes self-preservation is the better part of valor (counts as seeing Voldemort by default)
Finding Voldemort
Search Locations:
The hideout can appear in any location with the Cities module active. Common locations include:
- • Hogwarts
- • Hogsmeade
- • Diagon Alley
- • Knockturn Alley
- • Godric's Hollow
- • Ottery St. Catchpole
- • And any other custom locations your server has enabled
The more locations available, the harder it is to find Voldemort. It's like Where's Waldo, except Waldo is a mass-murdering wizard who really doesn't want to be found.
Divination (Scrying)
If configured on your server, Professor Trelawney can use Divination to locate Voldemort's hideout for you. This bypasses the search system entirely but costs gems (default: 0, meaning disabled by default).
How Scrying Works:
- Cost: Gems (if enabled by admin)
- Instant Location: Trelawney tells you exactly where Voldemort is hiding
- No Search Limit: Doesn't count against your daily search limit
- Trade-off: Gems vs. time - do you pay to skip the hunt?
Of course, trusting Divination from a professor who predicted Harry's death approximately seven times per term might be questionable, but the game mechanics guarantee accuracy, so you're probably fine.
Empty Hideout Rewards
When you find an empty hideout (Voldemort was here but left), you might receive configurable rewards or penalties:
- Gold: Find leftover gold (if configured > 0)
- Gems: Find scattered gems (if configured > 0)
- HP Loss: Take damage from curses/traps (if configured > 0)
- Nothing: Most servers leave these at 0, meaning empty hideouts are just empty
Default settings give you nothing, which makes sense. Voldemort isn't the type to leave money lying around. He's evil, not wasteful.
Increasing Difficulty
Progressive Challenge:
At a certain VE threshold (default: 7), finding Voldemort becomes significantly harder:
- Before VE 7: Hideout location is relatively easy to find
- VE 7+: Finding the hideout becomes a real challenge
- Search Limits: With only 1 search per day (default), you might spend multiple days hunting
- RNG Factor: Some players find it immediately, others search for days - that's the nature of randomness
This ensures that high-VE players don't just breeze through the encounter. Voldemort gets smarter about hiding as you defeat him repeatedly, which is either good game design or proof that he's a sore loser.
Strategy & Tips
Finding the Dark Lord Efficiently
- Search Early: Use your daily search as soon as you're ready for VE challenges
- Check All Locations: If searches were unlimited, you'd just try everywhere - but with limits, pray to RNGesus
- Divination Option: If enabled and you have gems, consider paying to skip the hunt
- Coordinate With Others: Players often share hideout locations in chat (if server rules allow)
- Be Patient: At high VEs, it might take several days to find the hideout - this is intentional
- Plan Ahead: Don't start searching on the last day of your game session
The Lore
Voldemort, throughout the Harry Potter series, was famously paranoid about security. He created multiple Horcruxes, used secret locations like the Chamber of Secrets, and changed hideouts frequently. He didn't trust anyone, including his own Death Eaters, and took extreme measures to protect himself from detection.
His various hideouts included: Riddle Manor (Little Hangleton), the Department of Mysteries, Malfoy Manor, the Gaunt shack, and countless other locations. He was constantly on the move, especially during his initial rise to power and again after his resurrection. The man understood the value of operational security, even if he didn't understand the value of not splitting his soul into seven pieces.
In HogwartsLive, this paranoia is represented by the constantly relocating hideout. It makes finding him part of the challenge, rather than just showing up to fight. It's thematically appropriate and adds a layer of gameplay beyond simple combat.
Module Info: The original module tracked dragon locations across multiple cities; the Harry Potter adaptation simply replaced "dragon" with "Voldemort" and "cave" with "hideout," while adding appropriate satirical descriptions about the Dark Lord's real estate preferences.
