Professor Trelawney's Remote Divination

Project your Inner Eye to distant locations and eavesdrop on conversations happening elsewhere. It's not creepy if it's magical!

The Inner Eye Sees All: Professor Trelawney's divination services allow you to remotely view and participate in conversations happening in other cities. It's like a magical video call, except with more incense and dramatic pronouncements.

What Is Remote Divination?

Remote Divination is a service offered by Professor Trelawney that allows you to "scry" (magically view) other locations in the game world. When you use this service, you can see and participate in the commentary/chat happening in a different city without physically traveling there.

This is particularly useful if you want to chat with friends in other cities, check what's happening in a distant location, or just eavesdrop on conversations without the inconvenience of actually going there. Professor Trelawney's Inner Eye makes it all possible, for a modest fee that she insists is necessary to "support her continued research into the Sight" (and also to pay rent, apparently).

How to Use Remote Divination

Step 1: Visit Professor Trelawney

Go to the Gypsy Tent (or wherever Professor Trelawney is located in your game). In the corner of the tent, you'll notice a particularly ornate crystal ball sitting on a table draped with shimmering fabric that appears to have been chosen specifically to distract from the numerous tea stains.

Noticing your gaze, Professor Trelawney adjusts her enormous spectacles and speaks in a misty, distant voice:

"Ah, my dear. I sense you wish to gaze beyond the confines of our immediate surroundings? To project your Inner Eye to distant locations? I could assist you in this most delicate of divinations — for the modest contribution of [cost] gold to support my continued research into the Sight."

Step 2: Pay the Fee

The cost of remote divination is 20 gold per level (configurable by admin). So if you're level 5, it costs 100 gold. If you're level 10, it costs 200 gold. The price scales with your level, presumably because more powerful wizards require more powerful divination magic (or because Trelawney knows you can afford it).

If you don't have enough gold, Professor Trelawney will peer at you through her enormous spectacles with an expression of profound disappointment and explain that "the cosmic forces require proper compensation" and that "the Inner Eye cannot function on such. budgetary constraints." She'll also mention that she has rent to pay, because even divination professors have bills.

Step 3: Choose Your Destination

Once you've paid, you'll see a list of available locations you can divine. These include:

  • • All cities/villages in the game
  • • Any location that has a commentary system
  • • Anywhere except your current location (you can't divine where you already are)

Select the location you want to view, and your consciousness will be projected there via the crystal ball.

Using Remote Divination

Viewing & Chatting

Once you've successfully divined a location, you can:

  • Read the commentary: See all the messages being posted in that location's chat
  • Post messages: Participate in the conversation as if you were physically there
  • Stay connected: Continue chatting for a limited number of messages (default: 5 messages)

Your messages will appear in the remote location's commentary just like anyone else's, so people there can respond to you. It's a fully interactive experience, not just passive viewing.

Message Limits

You can post a limited number of messages (default: 5) before the divination connection breaks. The game tracks how many times you've spoken, and when you hit the limit, your vision dissolves and you're yanked back to Trelawney's tent.

The disconnection message reads:

"With a sudden jolt that feels like being yanked backward by a poorly cast Summoning Charm, your vision of [location] dissolves, and you find yourself back in Trelawney's incense-heavy tent."

If you want to continue chatting, you'll need to pay again for another divination session.

Practical Uses

Social Connectivity

Chat with friends who are in different cities without having to travel. Perfect for coordinating plans, gossiping, or just staying in touch across the wizarding world.

Information Gathering

Check what's happening in other locations before deciding to travel there. See if there's interesting conversation, events, or activity worth visiting for.

Eavesdropping

Listen in on conversations happening elsewhere. It's not spying if you're using legitimate divination magic! (This is probably not legally sound advice.)

Multi-City Presence

Participate in multiple city chats without physically traveling. Useful for players who want to be socially active across the entire game world.

Tips & Tricks

  • Budget your messages: You only get 5 messages per payment, so make them count
  • Higher levels pay more: The cost scales with your level, so divination gets expensive as you progress
  • Requires Cities module: Remote Divination only works if the multiple villages/cities module is installed
  • Can't divine your own location: You must choose a different city than where you currently are
  • Trelawney has bills: She genuinely mentions needing to pay rent, which is oddly relatable for a mystical seer

Final Thoughts

Professor Trelawney's Remote Divination is a clever social feature that enhances connectivity in multi-city game worlds. It's not cheap, and the message limits prevent abuse, but it's incredibly useful for staying connected with friends across distances. Plus, the flavor text is delightful — Trelawney's dramatic mysticism combined with mundane concerns about rent creates a perfect blend of magical whimsy and relatable reality. The Inner Eye sees all, including overdue bills.
