Sicilian Encounter
Never go in against a Sicilian when death is on the line! A Princess Bride parody featuring Iocaine powder, kidnapped princesses, and classic blunders.
What Is the Sicilian Encounter?
The Sicilian Encounter is a forest event that parodies the famous "Battle of Wits" scene from The Princess Bride (1987). You stumble upon "an odd balding little man" sitting at a table with two glasses of wine and a kidnapped princess. The Sicilian challenges you to a drinking game where one glass contains Iocaine powder, a deadly poison. Your choice determines whether you win treasure, lose resources, or die.
Like the film, this encounter is all about wit, luck, and absurdity. The Sicilian pompously lectures you about "classic blunders" while you must decide which wine glass to drink from. True to the movie, the outcome is entirely random - there's no "correct" answer because the situation itself is a trap.
The Setup
The Scene:
When you encounter the Sicilian, he immediately assumes you work for "the Man in Black" and launches into a monologue:
- The Setup: Sicilian has kidnapped "the most beautiful girl in the world"
- The Captive: Princess tied up and blindfolded with knife at throat
- The Challenge: Two glasses of wine - one poisoned with Iocaine powder
- The Choice: Drink the wine on his side, your side, or leave
- The Stakes: Win and rescue princess (gain treasure), lose and suffer consequences
Your Choices
Drink His Wine
Take the glass in front of the Sicilian
Exact same outcomes as "Your Wine" - choice doesn't matter!
Drink Your Wine
Take the glass in front of you
Exact same outcomes as "His Wine" - choice doesn't matter!
Leave
Turn and walk away
Safe option - lose alignment (if enabled) but no other penalties
Wine Outcomes (Randomized)
The Truth About Choice:
Just like in the film, your choice of wine glass doesn't actually matter - both glasses produce the same random outcomes. The game is rigged, and the only "strategy" is luck. Here are the three possible results (equal probability):
Outcome 1: Death (20% chance)
- Death Message: "The last thought you have before dropping dead is 'I wonder how long it takes this poison to work, I'm in a hurry.'"
- Penalty: You die - sent to Shades (death page)
- Gold Loss: All gold lost
- HP Loss: Hitpoints drop to 0, alive flag set to 0
- News Post: "[Player] was outwitted by a Sicilian in the forest."
- Alignment: Gain "good" alignment points for trying to rescue princess (if alignment module active)
Outcome 2: Victory (40% chance)
The Sicilian launches into his classic blunder speech, then dies:
- Sicilian's Speech: "Haha. you fool! You fell victim to one of the classic blunders. The most famous is: Never get involved in a land war in Asia. Only slightly less well know is this: Never go in against a Sicilian when death is on the line!"
- Sicilian Dies: "Thankfully, the Sicilian falls over dead before he can launch another tirade."
- Princess Reaction: You untie her, she says "You're not my Westley!" and runs off
- Treasure: Loot the Sicilian's belongings (random reward)
- Alignment: Gain "good" alignment points (if module active)
- News Post: "Inconceivable! [Player] outwitted a Sicilian kidnapper in the forest and freed the princess."
Treasure Rewards (randomized):
- Gold (40% chance): Level × 50 gold (default setting, configurable)
- Gems (40% chance): 3 gems (default setting, configurable)
- Both (20% chance): Gold AND gems!
Outcome 3: Poisoned (40% chance)
You both drink, then you pass out from the poison:
- Unconscious Message: "Your last conscious thought is 'How did I get suckered into this?'"
- Recovery: "You regain consciousness several hours later. The Sicilian and the princess are gone and to top it off you hurt all over."
- Explanation: "You make a mental note to get an Iocaine powder booster shot, since your immunity to that poison is obviously almost gone."
- Alignment: Gain "good" alignment points for trying (if module active)
Penalties (all configurable):
- HP Loss: Reduced to 10% of current HP (minimum 1 HP)
- Forest Turns: Lose 4 turns (default, or all turns if setting = -1)
- Gold Loss: Lose configurable amount (default = all gold)
- Gem Loss: Lose 3 gems (default, or all gems if setting = -1)
- Survival: ".but at least you're still alive!"
Leave Option
Walk Away:
You can choose to leave instead of engaging in the battle of wits:
- Message: "You are obviously no match for this man's staggering intelligence, so you leave. The Sicilian's laughter follows you back to the forest."
- Penalty: Lose "evil" alignment points for abandoning the princess (if alignment module active)
- Otherwise: No rewards, no other penalties - safe exit
- Coward's Path: Best option if you can't afford the risk of death/major resource loss
Strategy & Probability
Optimal Play Analysis
- Choice is Meaningless: His wine vs your wine = identical outcomes, pure RNG
- Death Risk: 20% chance instant death with total gold loss - HIGH RISK
- Victory Chance: 40% chance to win treasure (gold or gems or both)
- Poison Survival: 40% chance to survive but lose most resources
- Expected Value: Negative for low-level players, potentially positive for high-level (more gold at stake)
- When to Play: Bank your gold first! Death = lose all gold on hand
- When to Leave: If you can't afford to die or lose resources - walk away
- Alignment Impact: All 3 wine outcomes give +good alignment, leave gives -evil alignment
- News Potential: Victory generates awesome news post with "Inconceivable!"
- Gem Value: 40% × 20% = 8% chance for gems only, 40% × 20% = 8% for gems+gold
- Administrator Notes: All penalties configurable - can be softened for casual servers
- Film-Accurate: Like the movie, there's no "right" choice - both glasses are actually poisoned (implied)
Canon Reference: The Princess Bride
The Princess Bride (1987) is a beloved fantasy comedy film directed by Rob Reiner, based on William Goldman's 1973 novel. The "Battle of Wits" scene features Vizzini the Sicilian (Wallace Shawn) kidnapping Princess Buttercup (Robin Wright) and challenging the Man in Black/Westley (Cary Elwes) to a drinking game with poisoned wine.
Film Scene Details:
- The Setup: Vizzini pours wine into two goblets, one poisoned with Iocaine powder
- Westley's Trick: He's built up an immunity to Iocaine powder and poisoned BOTH goblets
- Classic Blunders: "Never get involved in a land war in Asia" and "Never go in against a Sicilian when death is on the line!"
- Vizzini's Death: Laughs triumphantly, then falls over dead mid-sentence
- Outcome: Westley rescues Buttercup and they escape
HogwartsLive's implementation perfectly captures the scene's spirit with direct film quotes:
- "Haha. you fool! You fell victim to one of the classic blunders."
- "Never get involved in a land war in Asia"
- "Never go in against a Sicilian when death is on the line!"
- "Inconceivable!" (used in the victory news post)
- "You're not my Westley!" (Princess's disappointed response)
- Iocaine powder and immunity references
- "The most beautiful girl in the world" description
The module adds game-appropriate twists: the princess mistakes you for someone sent by "the Man in Black," you're hunting evil creatures rather than rescuing her specifically, and the random outcomes reflect the inherent absurdity of the situation. The detail about building up Iocaine immunity through "booster shots" is a clever adaptation of Westley's immunity storyline.
Encounter Info: Sicilian Encounter (sicilian.php) is a forest event parodying The Princess Bride's "Battle of Wits" scene. Player encounters Sicilian with kidnapped princess and two wine glasses (one poisoned with Iocaine powder). Choice of wine glass (his vs yours) doesn't affect outcome - both produce randomized results: 20% instant death + lose all gold, 40% victory (Sicilian dies, gain level×50 gold OR 3 gems OR both), 40% poisoned unconsciousness (lose 90% HP, 4 turns, configurable gold/gems). Player can choose "Leave" option for safe exit (loses evil alignment if active). All penalties/rewards configurable via admin settings. News posts on death ("outwitted by Sicilian") and victory ("Inconceivable!"). If alignment module active, attempting rescue grants good alignment points, leaving grants evil points.
