Mounts & Transportation
Magical creatures you can ride for stat bonuses and looking cool
What are Mounts?
Mounts are magical creatures you can purchase and ride for permanent stat bonuses. Unlike companions (which fight alongside you), mounts provide passive buffs that are always active. Think of them as magical transportation that also makes you stronger, faster, and generally more impressive.
Mounts are purchased with gold and gems at the Stables (or equivalent location). Once purchased, the mount's buffs are applied to your character permanently (until you buy a different mount). You can only have one mount at a time.
How Mounts Work
Each mount provides a "buff" - a set of stat modifiers that enhance your character:
- Attack Bonus: Increases your attack rolls in combat
- Defense Bonus: Increases your defense rolls in combat
- HP Bonus: Increases your maximum hitpoints
- Alignment Modifier: Some mounts affect your good/evil alignment at newday
- Special Effects: Some mounts have unique abilities or bonuses
The buffs are applied automatically when you purchase the mount and remain active as long as you own it. If you buy a different mount, the old mount's buffs are removed and the new mount's buffs are applied.
Mount Costs
Mounts typically cost both gold and gems:
Typical Mount Pricing:
- Basic Mounts: 1,000-5,000 gold + 5-10 gems
- Advanced Mounts: 10,000-50,000 gold + 20-50 gems
- Premium Mounts: 100,000+ gold + 100+ gems
Gems are the premium currency (earned through donations or special events), so mounts are a significant investment. However, the permanent stat bonuses make them worthwhile for serious players.
Selling Mounts
If you want to switch mounts, you can sell your current mount back to the stables. You'll receive a full refund of the gold and gems you paid, so there's no penalty for changing mounts. This allows you to experiment with different mounts without losing your investment.
Good News: Mount purchases are fully refundable! You can try different mounts and switch between them without losing gold or gems. The only cost is the time spent buying and selling.
Mount Alignment
Some mounts have alignment modifiers that affect your good/evil status:
- Good-Aligned Mounts: Increase your alignment at newday (make you more good)
- Evil-Aligned Mounts: Decrease your alignment at newday (make you more evil)
- Neutral Mounts: No alignment effect
This is useful if you're trying to maintain a specific alignment for features like Horcruxes (which require evil alignment). Owning an evil-aligned mount will slowly shift you toward evil over time.
Mount Strategy
Choosing the Right Mount:
- Early Game: Buy the cheapest mount you can afford for the stat boost
- Mid Game: Upgrade to better mounts as you earn more gold and gems
- Late Game: Invest in premium mounts with the best buffs
- Alignment Needs: Choose mounts based on alignment if you're working toward Horcruxes or other alignment-dependent features
- Combat Focus: Prioritize attack/defense bonuses if you're focused on combat
- HP Focus: Prioritize HP bonuses if you're dying frequently
Mount Examples
While specific mounts vary by server, common examples include:
Thestral
Dark, skeletal winged horse. Usually provides attack bonuses and evil alignment modifier. Good for players pursuing dark magic.
Hippogriff
Half-horse, half-eagle creature. Balanced stats with good attack and defense bonuses. Neutral alignment, good all-around mount.
Unicorn
Pure white magical horse. Usually provides defense/HP bonuses and good alignment modifier. Good for defensive players.
Dragon
Powerful flying reptile. Premium mount with high attack bonuses. Expensive but worth it for combat-focused players.
Mounts vs. Companions
Don't confuse mounts with companions:
- Mounts: Passive stat bonuses, purchased with gold/gems, permanent until sold
- Companions: Active combat participants, found randomly, can be knocked out
You can (and should) have both a mount and a companion. They serve different purposes and stack with each other.
Note: Some servers may have different mount systems or restrictions. Check your server's specific mount offerings at the Stables to see what's available.
