Minister of Magic Elections
Democratic chaos where wizards vote monthly to decide who gets the fanciest office at the Ministry
What Are Minister Elections?
The Minister of Magic Election system allows experienced players to run for and vote on the highest political office in the wizarding world. Elections run on a real-world monthly cycle, with voting happening throughout the month and a new Minister crowned on the 1st of each month. It's democracy in action, assuming democracy involves campaign contributions, daily voting, and the occasional curse thrown at rival candidates.
In the Harry Potter books, Ministers of Magic were appointed by mysterious processes that were never fully explained, which is probably for the best given the questionable leadership of figures like Cornelius Fudge. In HogwartsLive, you get to participate in (or exploit) the democratic process yourself, because nothing says "magical government" quite like letting players vote for their overlords.
How Elections Work
Election Cycle:
- Monthly Schedule: Elections run from the 1st of each month to the 1st of the next month
- Daily Voting: Players can cast one vote per newday throughout the election period
- Automatic Reset: At the start of each month, votes are tallied and a new election begins
- Continuous Process: There's always an election running - democracy never sleeps
Requirements
To Vote:
- Minimum VEs: 7 Voldemort Encounters (default setting)
- Voting Frequency: Once per newday (you can vote every game day)
- Voting Period: Throughout the entire month
To Run as Candidate:
- Minimum VEs: 50 Voldemort Encounters (default setting)
- Campaign Platform: Must create a platform explaining your promises/policies
- Campaign Period: Can register and campaign throughout the election month
- Withdrawal Option: Can withdraw candidacy at any time before election ends
Running for Minister
Becoming a Candidate:
- Register: Click "Register as Candidate" at the election hub
- Create Platform: Write your campaign promises and platform
- Campaign: Give speeches to persuade voters (limited to once per day)
- Accept Contributions: Receive gold donations from supporters (up to 5,000 gold per contributor by default)
- Monitor Results: Check current vote tallies throughout the month
Campaign Features:

Voting Process
How to Vote:
- Access Elections: Visit the Minister of Magic Election location
- Review Candidates: Read campaign platforms and speeches
- Cast Vote: Select your preferred candidate and submit
- Vote Daily: You can vote once per newday - your votes accumulate throughout the month
- Track Progress: Check election results to see current standings
Important: Unlike real-world elections where you vote once, in HogwartsLive you vote every single day. This means active players have significantly more voting power than inactive ones, which is either brilliant game design or a concerning commentary on voter engagement, depending on your perspective.
Campaign Contributions
Players can donate gold to their favorite candidates to support their campaigns:
- Maximum Per Player: 5,000 gold per contributor (default setting)
- No Limits on Total: Candidates can receive contributions from unlimited players
- Gold Goes to Candidate: Contributions are transferred directly to the candidate's account
- Track Your Contributions: The system tracks which candidates you've supported
It's basically a system where you can literally buy political influence, which is either satirical commentary on real-world politics or just a convenient way to transfer gold between players. Possibly both.
Winning the Election
Election Results:
On the 1st of each month, votes are tallied and the winner is determined:
- Most Votes Wins: The candidate with the highest vote total becomes Minister
- Historical Record: Past elections and winners are stored in election history
- Times Elected Tracked: The system tracks how many times each player has won
- New Election Starts: Immediately after results, a fresh election begins for the new month
Benefits of Being Minister
Server-Specific Perks: Benefits vary by server configuration, but typically include:
- Title/Status: Recognition as the elected Minister of Magic
- Hall of Fame Entry: Your term is recorded in election history
- Bragging Rights: You convinced more people to vote for you than anyone else
- Potential Perks: Some servers may grant special abilities, bonuses, or access to Minister-only features
Check with your server's specific configuration to see what additional benefits the Minister position provides. On some servers it's purely ceremonial; on others, you might actually get to do Minister-y things like make important decisions or wear a fancy hat.
Strategy & Tips
Winning Elections
- Campaign Early: Register at the start of the month to maximize campaign time
- Daily Speeches: Give campaign speeches every day to stay visible
- Compelling Platform: Write a platform that actually appeals to voters (bribery works too)
- Build Alliances: Coordinate with clans, friends, and allies to secure their votes
- Accept Contributions: Campaign funds can help you in other ways (it's your gold to keep)
- Vote for Yourself: Don't forget to vote for yourself every single day
- Stay Active: Inactive candidates tend to lose - voters notice participation
- Monitor Competition: Check results regularly to see where you stand
- Be Gracious: Win or lose, remember it's a game about wizard politics
The Lore
In the Harry Potter universe, the Minister of Magic is the head of the Ministry of Magic and the most powerful political figure in the British wizarding world. The books featured several Ministers:
- Cornelius Fudge: Incompetent bureaucrat who refused to believe Voldemort had returned, leading to catastrophic consequences
- Rufus Scrimgeour: Tougher than Fudge but ultimately killed by Death Eaters during Voldemort's takeover
- Pius Thicknesse: Imperioused puppet Minister under Voldemort's control
- Kingsley Shacklebolt: Competent Auror who became Minister after Voldemort's defeat and actually did a good job
The process for becoming Minister was never clearly explained in the books, though it seemed to involve a combination of political maneuvering, Wizengamot support, and being in the right place at the right time when the previous Minister died or resigned. HogwartsLive's system of monthly democratic elections is significantly more transparent, if potentially more chaotic.
Module Info: It implements a fully functional election system with daily voting, campaign management, contribution tracking, and historical records. Elections run continuously on a real-world monthly cycle, making the Minister position a competitive achievement that requires both popularity and consistent player engagement.
