Donations & Donator Points
How to support the server and get shiny perks
What are Donations?
HogwartsLive is a free-to-play game that has been running since 2004. It's maintained by volunteers who pay for server costs, development time, and the occasional therapy session required to deal with player petitions. Donations help keep the lights on and the servers running.
When you donate, you receive Donator Points (also called "site points," "contributor points," or "DP") that can be spent on various in-game perks and features. "Gems" are a completely different thing — a regular in-game item you find or buy with gold — so don't go looking for a gem/DP exchange rate; there isn't one built into how you earn them (though a few modules let you trade one for the other).
What are Donator Points?
Donator Points are the premium currency of HogwartsLive. You earn them at a fixed rate of 100 points per $1.00 USD donated via the PayPal button in the Prefect's Lounge (the separate "Donate via PayPal" LoGD button does not grant points). They can be spent on whatever perks the server's installed modules choose to sell for DP — in practice that includes things like named/permanent mounts, custom title and name changes, name colors, cosmetic wardrobe items, VIP membership, term passes, and seasonal event badges. The exact catalog is entirely module-driven, so check the Lounge itself for the current list.
How to Donate
To donate, visit the Prefect's Lounge from the village. There you'll find:
- An explanation of how points are earned and what they've historically funded (server costs, hosting, bandwidth — nothing else)
- The PayPal donate button
- Your current point balance and how many you've spent
- Whatever DP-spendable perks are currently installed
Note: Donations are accepted in whole-dollar increments. There's also a referral program — refer someone who reaches level 10 and you'll earn Donator Points for it, enough on its own to unlock Lounge access.
Prefect's Lounge
The Prefect's Lounge is the exclusive donator area. Once you've donated, you gain access to:
Special Chat
A private commentary area for donators to chat without the rabble. It's like a VIP lounge, but with more wizards and fewer velvet ropes.
Exclusive Features
Access to donator-only modules, events, and activities. The exact features vary by server, but they're generally worth the price of admission.
Donator Point Shop
Purchase mounts, cosmetics, and other goodies with your points. Everything here costs DP, not gold and not gems — a separate economy from the rest of the game.
Donator Point Economy
Points are valuable and mostly non-refundable, so spend with intent:
Spending Strategy:
- Named mounts first: a permanent, one-time purchase is usually the best long-term value
- Donations are final: there's no general refund policy — treat every purchase as permanent
- Save for the big ticket items: mounts and VIP membership cost more than cosmetics, so don't blow your balance on the first shiny thing you see
- Don't hoard forever: points sitting unspent aren't doing anything for you
Earning Points Without Donating
Donating is the primary way to earn Donator Points, but there's one built-in alternative: referrals. Refer a new player and get them to reach level 10, and you'll earn a flat point reward — enough by itself to unlock Lounge access. Beyond that, whatever a given module hooks into the DP economy (seasonal event badges, milestone rewards, etc.) is the extent of it — there's no general "grind for points" system.
Donation Ethics
A few important points about donations:
- Not Pay-to-Win: Donations provide convenience and cosmetics, not overwhelming power
- Support the Game: Your donations directly support server costs and development
- Voluntary: You can enjoy the full game without ever donating
- No Refunds: Donations are final - spend Donator Points carefully
- Don't Beg: Asking other players for Donator Points is frowned upon
Alumni Status
Donate 5,000 lifetime Donator Points (roughly $50 total, all-time — it doesn't need to be one donation) and your account is flagged as a Hogwarts Live Alumni. That flag does exactly one thing: it protects your account from inactivity/deletion cleanup. It's not a badge, a title, or a Lounge-access perk — just a permanent "don't purge this one" marker as thanks for sticking around. Donating isn't the only way to earn this protection, either — racking up 50+ Voldemort Encounters grants the same purge-immunity independent of any donation, so veteran non-donating players are safe too.
Thank You: If you've donated to HogwartsLive, thank you for keeping the game alive. Your support makes it possible for thousands of players to enjoy this ridiculous Harry Potter RPG parody. You're the real heroes.
