What are Donations?

HogwartsLive is a free-to-play game that has been running since 2004. It's maintained by volunteers who pay for server costs, development time, and the occasional therapy session required to deal with player petitions. Donations help keep the lights on and the servers running.

When you donate, you receive Donator Points (also called "site points," "contributor points," or "DP") that can be spent on various in-game perks and features. "Gems" are a completely different thing: a regular in-game item you find or buy with gold. So don't go looking for a gem/DP exchange rate; there isn't one built into how you earn them (though a few modules let you trade one for the other).

What are Donator Points?

Donator Points are the premium currency of HogwartsLive. You earn them at a fixed rate of 100 points per $1.00 USD donated via the PayPal button in the Prefect's Lounge (the separate "Donate via PayPal" LoGD button does not grant points). They can be spent on whatever perks the server's installed modules choose to sell for DP. In practice that includes things like named/permanent mounts, custom title and name changes, name colors, cosmetic wardrobe items, term passes, and seasonal event badges. VIP Membership itself is a separate PayPal subscription rather than a Donator Point purchase, though its own rented badge climbs to a new tier the longer you keep paying for it. The exact catalog is entirely module-driven, so check the Lounge itself for the current list.

How to Donate

To donate, visit the Prefect's Lounge from the village. There you'll find:

• An explanation of how points are earned and what donations fund (servers, hosting, domains, bandwidth, software, hardware, development tools, infrastructure, security, community activities, and other operational expenses)
• The PayPal donate button
• Your current point balance and how many you've spent
• Whatever DP-spendable perks are currently installed

Where the Lounge keeps its doors

The Lounge is a lobby, not a till. Each entry under Use Points is a door to the page where that purchase is actually made, and the rule is that anything costing Donator Points has one. The current doors include forest fights and arcade tokens (single tokens and the daily Arcade Token Pack), Chocolate Frog Card Packs, Zonko's Chat Effects, Sybill's Extra Spins, the Cosmetic Emporium and Badge Catalog, the Wardrobe and Your Dorm (both open your profile editor), the Seasonal Event Desk, titles, name colors, mounts and the rest of the classic shelf, Found or Upgrade a Club and Dwellings (build with points). Two entries are conditional: Apothecary Rare Ingredients appears only while the administration has put a point price on them, and the Star Fruit Seed turns up only for a player who has earned the right to be tempted. Club boost weeks and clubhouse decor need a club to spend them on, so they are reached from the Clubs office instead.

Earning Points Without Donating

Donating is the primary way to earn Donator Points, but there are a few built-in alternatives. The referral program pays both sides of a genuine introduction: a newly referred player collects 20 points on their first newday, and the player who referred them earns a flat bonus when the recruit's first payment settles (the intermediate milestones settle in badges, not points). Beyond that, whatever a given feature ties into the DP economy (seasonal event badges, milestone rewards, etc.) is the extent of it. There's no general "grind for points" system.

The First Galleon Bonus

Your first donation of $5 or more (500 Donator Points at the standard rate) earns a one-time bonus of 150 extra Donator Points, credited automatically together with the donation, plus the permanent First Galleon badge on your profile. It applies exactly once, to the first qualifying donation, and it does not matter how many Donator Points you had already earned through streaks, referrals, or the wheel: the bonus tracks your first real donation, not your first point.

If PayPal Sends the Money Back

The castle does not offer refunds, and the "Donations are final" rule above is about asking: nobody here can un-buy a donation for you. PayPal, however, keeps its own ledger, and when PayPal reverses a payment (a refund issued there, a dispute, a chargeback), the castle's books quietly undo what that payment bought. The Donator Points it granted come back off your balance, in proportion if the refund was only partial. Points you already spent cannot dig the balance below zero; whatever cannot be recovered that way is handed to the staff, who settle it by hand and have opinions about being handed things. A VIP charge refunded in full gives back its whole cycle: the membership's end date rewinds to the day that cycle started. A referral bonus that payment paid to whoever referred you goes back too, and a payment that ends up refunded never pays one at all. The bursar's office files all of this under arithmetic, not consequence: the money left, so the goods are no longer paid for.

Donation Ethics

A few important points about donations:

• Not Pay-to-Win: Donations provide convenience and cosmetics, not overwhelming power
• Support the Game: Your donations directly support server costs and development
• Voluntary: You can enjoy the full game without ever donating
• No Refunds: Donations are final - spend Donator Points carefully
• Don't Beg: Asking other players for Donator Points is frowned upon

Alumni Status and the $50 Milestone

Reach 5,000 lifetime Donator Points (roughly $50 total, all-time, and it doesn't need to be one donation) and the castle's records office quietly updates four separate files on you. Here's what happens:

• Hogwarts Live Alumni status. Your account is permanently exempt from the inactivity/deletion cleanup that otherwise expels students who go quiet for too long. It's not a badge, a title, or a Lounge-access perk, just a permanent "don't purge this one" marker as thanks for sticking around. Donating isn't the only way to earn it, either: racking up 50 or more Voldemort Encounters grants the same purge immunity independent of any donation, so veteran non-donating players are exempt too.
• Custom titles from 5,000 lifetime points. In the Prefect's Lounge you can set the prefix on your character name (the "Firstyearboy" or "Seventhyeargirl" part) to whatever you like. At 5,000 lifetime Donator Points (about $50 all-time) the title office opens, and nothing is ever deducted for a title. Each change after the first wants your lifetime total 5 points higher than the last one did, so re-titling yourself stays cheap, just not unlimited.
• One free House change. Also in the Lounge, also free of charge. Decide the Sorting Hat had an off day and switch Houses on the spot. The same "another five points, another change" refill applies here too.
• Rare wand woods and cores. The standard wand fitting at Ollivander's (a random roll) and the profile editor's manual wand picker both draw from 24 woods and 8 cores. Past 5,000 points, 8 further woods (Ebony, Elder, Lacewood, Olive, Pink Ivory, Purpleheart, Tulipwood, Zebrawood) and 4 further cores (Chimaera Scale, Runespoor Fang, Thestral Hair, Veela Hair) join the pool. Entirely cosmetic, entirely worth bragging about.

Keep climbing and the castle keeps noticing: a custom Display Name (the part after your title) unlocks at 10,000 lifetime points, roughly $100, free of charge, same as everything above it.
