Cupid's Arrow
A random event in which a deeply incompetent cherub -- though 'cherub' is doing a lot of charitable work in that sentence -- terrorizes the village, gardens, and Forbidden Forest with romantic projectiles. Features three player choices per encounter, each with multiple random outcomes. Integrates with the Marriage and Flirting systems. Once per day limit. The arrow's tip glows a suspicious shade of pink. Small hearts appear to orbit it like confused satellites.
Location & Access
Where Cupid Appears:
- VillagseCsities/Locations: Random chance on each visit (default: 25%) — appears in village description as "a small, chubby figure wobbles overhead on improbable wings"
- Shrieking Shack (gardens): Random chance on each visit (default: 30%) — "a suspicious cherub is hovering near the rosebushes"
- Forbidden Forest: Forest special event (default: 60% weight) — arrow embeds in a tree next to your head with a card reading "BEE MINE"
Requirements:
- Marriage module must be active
- Flirting module must be active
- Not already hit by Cupid today (cupidhittoday pref = 0)
- If already hit today: Cupid has flown off, encounter is flavor text only
The Cherub:
- Pudgy figure with improbable wings
- Wings beat with the frantic energy of a bumblebee that has just been told about gravity
- Wearing a nappy ("Been doin' this since before trousers were invented")
- Holds a bow that appears to be held together with optimism and string
- Consults a scroll covered in red crayon hearts with crossed-out entries
- Speaks in ALL CAPS with a regional accent
Three Choices
Every encounter gives you three options. Each has multiple random outcomes with different rewards and consequences.
Choice 1: Accept the Arrow
Stand still and let the cherub shoot you. Bravery, foolishness, or romantic optimism — hard to tell the difference.
- 6 possible outcomes (equal chance)
- Generally positive: charm gains, buffs, gold, gems, bonus flirt points
- Minor downsides on some outcomes (lost turn, falling in love with a signpost)
- Married players get bonus outcomes (double charm/flirt, love letter to spouse)
Choice 2: Dodge the Arrow
Attempt evasive maneuvers. Results vary from graceful to catastrophic.
- 5 possible outcomes (equal chance)
- Mixed results: some gold gains, some charm loss, one where the arrow ricochets back
- Possible: landing in rosebush (HP loss + bonus turn), pickpocketing Cupid (gold), or triggering an existential crisis
- One outcome grants a "Lucky Escape" defensive buff
Choice 3: Reason with Cupid
Attempt philosophical discussion about the nature of love with an armed infant. This goes about as well as you'd expect, which is to say: unpredictably.
- 5 possible outcomes (equal chance)
- Highest potential rewards (double gold, best buffs, gem chance)
- Also highest variance (could get arrow to the knee)
- One outcome involves sharing biscuits and becoming friends
- One outcome causes Cupid to have a 45-minute existential crisis and hand you all his gold

Marriage Integration
Bonus for Married Players:
- Accept Arrow (outcome 1): Bonus flirt points sent to spouse via
marriage_modifyflirtpoints() - Accept Arrow (outcome 6): DOUBLE charm and flirt points if married; a love letter is owl-mailed to your spouse
- Cheating mechanic: Arrow effects use
$punish=false, so accepting Cupid's arrow does NOT trigger infidelity alerts — even Cupid isn't that cruel - Single players: Get standard rewards plus commentary from Cupid about their relationship status ("DON'T WORRY. I'VE GOT LOADS MORE ARROWS. LAW OF AVERAGES, INNIT.")
Love Letter: When a married player rolls outcome 6, their spouse receives an owl mail reading: "Cupid's arrow struck [name] today, and their first thought was of you. Which is terribly romantic, even if Cupid himself is terribly incompetent."

Strategy
Which Choice Is Best?
- Accept Arrow: Best for married players (spouse bonus, flirt points, love letters). Most consistent charm gains. No major downsides. Safest choice.
- Dodge Arrow: Worst expected value overall. Some gold, possible HP loss, minor buffs. Choose this for flavor, not optimization.
- Reason with Cupid: Highest ceiling (double gold, best buffs, gem chance, full HP heal). Also has the "Arrow to the Knee" debuff risk. High risk, high reward.
Optimal Play
- If married: Accept Arrow — 2 of 6 outcomes give marriage bonuses, one sends a love letter
- If single and risk-tolerant: Reason with Cupid — highest potential rewards
- If single and cautious: Accept Arrow — most consistent charm gains, no debuffs
- If you want entertainment: Any choice — the writing is the real reward
Charm Value
- Charm is extremely expensive to gain normally
- Cupid can give +1 to +6 charm per encounter (with marriage bonus)
- Even +1 charm from a free event is excellent value
- This is one of the better charm sources in the game
Selected Cupid Quotes
The cherub has opinions on many subjects:
- "HOLD STILL. I'VE GOT SIX MORE OF THESE AND ME QUOTA IS RUBBISH."
- "THE WAY THIS WORKS IS, I SHOOT YOU, YOU FALL IN LOVE WITH THE NEXT THING YOU SEE. SIMPLE AS."
- "BEEN DOIN' THIS SINCE -- WELL, I DON'T REMEMBER EXACTLY, BUT IT WAS BEFORE TROUSERS WERE INVENTED, WHICH EXPLAINS -- THIS." (gestures at nappy)
- "THAT'S WHAT WE IN THE BUSINESS CALL 'FATE.' YOU CAN DODGE FATE, BUT FATE'S GOT BETTER ANGLES."
- "WHAT AM I? JUST A FAT BABY WITH A BOW? IS THAT ALL THERE IS? IS LOVE JUST BIOCHEMISTRY? AM I REDUNDANT?"
- "NOBODY THINKS ABOUT CUPID'S FEELINGS. IT'S ALL 'SHOOT HIM, SHOOT HER, MAKE THEM FALL IN LOVE.' NEVER 'HOW ARE YOU, CUPID? DO YOU NEED TROUSERS, CUPID?'"
- "SINGLE, EH? DON'T WORRY. I'VE GOT LOADS MORE ARROWS. LAW OF AVERAGES, INNIT."
- On socks as Valentine's gifts: "PRACTICAL. SHOWS YOU CARE ABOUT THEIR FEET."

Cupid's Arrow: where a pudgy celestial being whose wings beat with the frantic energy of a bumblebee that has just been told about gravity circles overhead clutching a bow held together with optimism and string wearing a nappy because trousers hadn't been invented when he started this job consulting a scroll covered in red crayon hearts with entries like "Mrs. Norris + The Whomping Willow" crossed out and you get three choices: stand still and get shot which results in either genuine romantic feelings or falling in love with a brick wall or composing terrible poetry that rhymes heart with fart, or dodge which ends with you in a rosebush or the arrow ricocheting off a weather vane and hitting you in the backside anyway because "FATE'S GOT BETTER ANGLES," or attempt philosophical discussion about the nature of love which may result in a productive conversation about whether socks are an acceptable Valentine's gift (Cupid is firmly pro-socks) or a forty-five-minute existential crisis during which the cherub questions his career choices and whether love is just biochemistry and whether he's redundant while you pat him awkwardly on the wing and he blows his nose on his quiver. Married players get bonus flirt points and love letters to their spouse. The arrow's tip glows a suspicious shade of pink. Small hearts orbit it like confused satellites. Nobody ever asks how Cupid is doing.
