Thalia's Cookie Stand

Village random event (50% base chance, once per day). Beautiful girl named Thalia offers free cookie sample from her pastry cart. 5 flavors (chocolate chip, oatmeal, sugar, peanut butter, almond). Accept and get random outcome: 20% lose charm, 20% lose HP, 60% lose gold/gems (or nothing if broke). Decline and walk away safely. Try twice in one day and she throws stones at you.

The Event

Your nose tingles—delectable treats nearby. You see a well-appointed pastry cart attended by a beautiful girl. She smiles: "Would you like a free sample?"

Two options:

  • Yes: Accept the cookie
  • No, Not Today: Decline and walk away (nothing happens)

Cookie Flavors

Random selection from 5 flavors (no mechanical difference):

  • Chocolate Chip
  • Oatmeal
  • Sugar
  • Peanut Butter
  • Almond

She hands you the cookie. You stuff it in your mouth and chew happily. Thalia smirks: "Umm, you have some on the edge of your mouth." Then RNG determines your fate.

Outcomes (5 Cases, Equal Probability)

Case 1 (20%): Embarrassment

  • Thalia laughs at you, trying to stifle chuckles
  • You feel embarrassed and run off crying
  • Lose: 1-3 charm (random)

Case 2 (20%): Nail Scratch

  • Thalia helps brush crumbs away
  • One of her nails scratches you across the face
  • Lose: 1-4 HP (random, minimum 0 HP)

Case 3 (20%): Pickpocket

  • Thalia brushes crumbs from your face
  • You feel something near your gold bag but disregard it
  • If you have ≥ random(1-100) gold: Lose that amount of gold
  • Else if you have ≥ 1 gem: Lose 1 gem
  • Else: She finds nothing, you lose nothing (lucky poverty!)

Case 4 (20%): Charm Gain

  • Thalia brushes the crumbs away gently
  • She smiles at you warmly
  • Gain: 1-2 charm (random)
  • ONLY POSITIVE OUTCOME

Case 5 (20%): Gold Gain

  • Thalia brushes the crumbs away
  • You notice something shiny fell from her apron
  • Gain: 1-100 gold (random)

Once Per Day Limit

If you already took a cookie today (count=1) and encounter Thalia again:

  • Thalia: "Haven't I seen you here before?"
  • She gets flustered and hurls a stone at your head
  • You dodge it and run off screaming
  • No other effects (just shame)

Limit resets at newday.

Expected Value Analysis

Outcomes Summary:

  • 20% lose 1-3 charm (avg 2 charm)
  • 20% lose 1-4 HP (avg 2.5 HP)
  • 20% lose 1-100 gold OR 1 gem (if you have any)
  • 20% gain 1-2 charm (avg 1.5 charm)
  • 20% gain 1-100 gold (avg 50.5 gold)

Charm EV: (20% × -2) + (20% × +1.5) = -0.4 + 0.3 = -0.1 charm expected

Gold EV: (20% × -50.5) + (20% × +50.5) = 0 gold expected (if equal probability)

HP EV: 20% × -2.5 = -0.5 HP expected

Verdict: Slightly negative EV overall. You're likely to lose more than you gain. But 40% chance of positive outcomes makes it tempting.

Strategy

If Broke: Accept cookie. Can't lose gold/gems if you have none. Only risk is charm/HP loss.

If Rich: Decline. 20% chance to lose 1-100 gold is risky. Avg loss of 10 gold (20% × 50g) vs avg gain of 10 gold (20% × 50g) isn't worth HP/charm risk.

If You Need Charm: Decline. Net charm EV is negative (-0.1). Better charm sources exist.

If You're a Gambler: Accept. 40% positive outcomes vs 60% negative outcomes, but positive outcomes can be significant (100 gold max).

Optimal Strategy: Decline unless you have 0 gold and 0 gems (poverty protection). Or accept if you're feeling lucky and don't value HP/charm.

Thalia's Cookie Stand: where "free sample" means "free chance to be robbed, scratched, and humiliated." At least the cookies taste good.
