Thalia's Cookie Stand
Village random event (50% base chance, once per day). Beautiful girl named Thalia offers free cookie sample from her pastry cart. 5 flavors (chocolate chip, oatmeal, sugar, peanut butter, almond). Accept and get one of five equally likely outcomes: lose charm, lose HP, lose gold/gems (or gain 1 pity charm if you're broke), gain 1-3 Forest Fights, or gain 1-3 charm. Decline and walk away safely. Try twice in one day and she throws stones at you.
The Event
Your nose tingles—delectable treats nearby. You see a well-appointed pastry cart attended by a beautiful girl. She smiles: "Would you like a free sample?"
Two options:
- Yes: Accept the cookie
- No, Not Today: Decline and walk away (nothing happens)
Cookie Flavors
Random selection from 5 flavors (no mechanical difference):
- Chocolate Chip
- Oatmeal
- Sugar
- Peanut Butter
- Almond
She hands you the cookie. You stuff it in your mouth and chew happily. Thalia smirks: "Umm, you have some on the edge of your mouth." Then RNG determines your fate.
Outcomes (5 Cases, Equal Probability)
Case 1 (20%): Embarrassment
- Thalia laughs at you, trying to stifle chuckles
- You feel embarrassed and run off crying
- Lose: 1-3 charm (random)
Case 2 (20%): Nail Scratch
- Thalia helps brush crumbs away
- One of her nails scratches you across the face
- Lose: 1-4 HP (random, minimum 0 HP)
Case 3 (20%): Pickpocket
- Thalia brushes crumbs from your face
- You feel something near your gold bag but disregard it
- If you have ≥ random(1-100) gold: Lose that amount of gold
- Else if you have ≥ 1 gem: Lose 1 gem
- Else: Thalia says "Seeya" and you gain 1 charm, for no reason (poverty's one perk)
Case 4 (20%): Annoying Song
- Thalia sits down, pops her neck, and starts humming a song that gets on everybody's nerves
- Thoroughly annoyed, you stand and depart, itching to pummel something
- Gain: 1-3 Forest Fights (random)
Case 5 (20%): Impromptu Haircut
- Thalia purses her lips, lunges at you with scissors, and grooms your hair
- She nods appreciatively
- Gain: 1-3 charm (random)
Once Per Day Limit
If you already took a cookie today (count=1) and encounter Thalia again:
- Thalia: "Haven't I seen you here before?"
- She gets flustered and hurls a stone at your head
- You dodge it and run off screaming
- No other effects (just shame)
Limit resets at newday.
Expected Value Analysis
Outcomes Summary:
- 20% lose 1-3 charm (avg 2 charm)
- 20% lose 1-4 HP (avg 2.5 HP)
- 20% lose gold up to a random 1-100 amount, or 1 gem, or (if broke) gain 1 charm
- 20% gain 1-3 Forest Fights (avg 2)
- 20% gain 1-3 charm (avg 2 charm)
Charm EV: (20% × -2) + (20% × +2) + (small poverty-charm sliver from Case 3) ≈ roughly a wash, tilted positive if you're broke
Gold EV: Purely a loss column now — 20% chance of losing up to 100 gold (or a gem), with no gold-gain outcome to offset it
HP EV: 20% × -2.5 = -0.5 HP expected
Verdict: There is no gold-gain outcome at all — the best this cookie does for your coin purse is leave it untouched. Three of five outcomes are neutral-to-good for a broke player; a rich player is pure downside on the gold roll.
Strategy
If Broke: Accept cookie. The gold/gem case can't touch you and instead hands you a pity charm — of the five outcomes, only charm-loss and HP-loss are real risks.
If Rich: Decline. There's no upside for your gold — Case 3 only ever takes, never gives.
If You Need Charm: Lean accept if you're broke (charm-loss risk offset by two charm-gain paths). Otherwise it's a coin flip against a guaranteed loss case.
If You're a Gambler: Accept. Worst case is a modest HP or charm loss; best case is free Forest Fights or charm, with no catastrophic outcome.
Optimal Strategy: Accept when you have 0 gold and 0 gems (poverty protection removes the only pure-loss case). Decline when flush with gold you don't want to gamble.
Thalia's Cookie Stand: where "free sample" means "free chance to be robbed, scratched, and humiliated." At least the cookies taste good.
