The Sorting Hat

A thousand-year-old hat that reads your mind and decides your social status. Perfectly normal.

Warning: The Sorting Hat is sentient, opinionated, and has been making life-altering decisions for students since before your great-great-great-grandparents were born. It knows what it's doing. Probably.

What Is the Sorting Hat?

The Sorting Hat is a magical artifact created by the four founders of Hogwarts to sort students into houses. It's essentially a hat with a mind of its own, which sounds like the setup to a horror story but is actually considered perfectly normal in the wizarding world.

The hat works by reading your thoughts, analyzing your personality, and determining which house best suits your character. This process is called "sorting," and it happens to every new student during the Sorting Ceremony at the beginning of their first year.

How Does Sorting Work?

When you first visit Hogwarts in the game (or if you're unsorted for any reason), you'll be redirected to the Sorting Ceremony. Here's what actually happens:

  1. The Sorting Hat sings its song — You'll see the full Sorting Hat song from the Harry Potter books, describing each house's traits. It's the same song every time, so if you've been sorted before, you've already heard it.
  2. The hat "deliberates" — The hat will say some generic things about you having courage, talent, and a thirst to prove yourself (it says this to everyone, don't let it go to your head).
  3. You choose your house — Here's the truth: you pick your own house. The hat doesn't actually sort you based on a quiz or personality test. You just click on the house you want to join.
  4. You join your house — Once you've chosen, you're sorted into that house permanently. Your house will become your team for earning house points and competing for the House Cup.

House Balance Restrictions

There's one important restriction: houses can't have more than 25% of the total player population. If a house is "full" (has more than 25% of all players), you won't be able to join it until the population balances out.

This prevents everyone from piling into one house and ensures all four houses have roughly equal numbers. If your preferred house is full, you'll need to choose a different house or wait until the population shifts.

Pro Tip: Choose What You Like

Since you're choosing your own house, pick the one that appeals to you most. There's no "best" house — each has its own identity and community. Read the house descriptions, think about which traits you identify with, and make your choice. You can't change it later, so choose wisely!

What If You Don't Like Your House?

Tough luck. Once you've chosen your house, that's it. You can't change houses, transfer, or get re-sorted. Your house choice is permanent for that character, so choose carefully!

If you really hate your house choice, your only option is to create a new character and choose a different house during sorting. But you'll lose all your progress, so it's better to just embrace your house and make the best of it.

Important: No House Changes

Once you've been sorted, that's it. There's no house transfer system, no re-sorting option, and no way to change your mind. Make sure you're happy with your choice before you click that link, because you'll be stuck with it for the rest of your character's life.

The Sorting Ceremony Experience

When you go through sorting in Hogwarts Live, you'll see:

It's a nice atmospheric moment that sets the tone for your Hogwarts experience. Take your time, read the descriptions, and choose the house that feels right for you.

When Does Sorting Happen?

You'll be sorted in these situations:

Once you're sorted, you won't see the sorting screen again unless you create a new character.

Fun Fact

The Sorting Hat originally belonged to Godric Gryffindor. The other founders enchanted it together so it could continue sorting students long after they were gone. This means the hat contains the combined wisdom and knowledge of all four founders, which explains why it's so insufferably smug.

What Happens After Sorting?

Once you've been sorted, you'll be assigned to your house's common room, given access to house-specific areas, and added to your house's roster for competitions and events. You'll also start earning (or losing) house points based on your actions, so try not to embarrass your house too badly in the first week.

Your house will become an important part of your Hogwarts experience. You'll make friends with your housemates, compete against other houses, and develop a sense of house pride that borders on irrational. This is normal and expected.
