Lich Encounter
Graveyard event where you meet an undead spellcaster. Tall figure wrapped in bandages and dark robe with burning blue eyes approaches while you lament. Asks for one gem in exchange for a favor. Three random outcomes if you give gem (33.3% each): soul gem reward (+gravefight + deathpower 4-10 + Bellatrix favor), tricked (lich vanishes laughing, +gravefight only from revenge desire), or agonizing incantation (+1-3 permanent max HP with cryptic message). Decline option safe but no rewards. If you have no gems, lich grunts disgust and leaves. Once per day maximum (seenlich preference reset at newday). Configurable encounter chance (default 50 weight). Where you meet a sepulchral-voiced undead creature who may or may not scam you depending on a three-sided die roll.
The Encounter
Location & Trigger:
- Graveyard event hook
- Weight: Configurable (lichchance setting, default 50)
- Frequency: Once per day maximum (seenlich pref)
- If seenlich=1: Weight returns 0 (no encounter)
- Resets at newday (seenlich → 0)
Initial Description:
- "`2Sitting upon a rock, lamenting your fate, you are approached by a tall figure wrapped in bandages and a dark robe."
- "`2Looking into the creature's burning blue eyes, you have no doubt a lich is standing before you.`n`n"
- Lich: "`3\"Fear me not, spiritling,\" says the lich in a sepulchral voice."
- "`3\"I ask only a favor of ye. A gem I seek to extend my magicks. A favor I shall grant, in return.\"`n`n"
Gem Check:
- If gems < 1: Lich senses you have none
- "`2However, upon sensing you have none, the lich merely grunts his disgust, and walks away.`n`n"
- No choices (automatic dismissal)
- specialinc cleared, return to graveyard
- No reward, no penalty (safe but wasted encounter)
If You Have Gem:
- Two choices appear:
- [Give Gem] - Trade gem for random outcome
- [Decline] - Refuse trade, lich leaves
Choice 1: Decline
Safe Refusal:
- Message: "`2The lich grunts his disapproval and stares at you with his burning eyes.`n`n"
- Lich: "`3\"What need have ye of riches here?\" he chides you, sweeping an emaciated arm about the barren graveyard.`n`n"
- "`2Annoyed with you, he simply sighs and walks away.`n`n"
Result:
- No cost (keep your gem)
- No reward (no benefits)
- No penalty (safe option)
- specialinc cleared, return to graveyard
- seenlich NOT set (can encounter again today if decline)
Choice 2: Give Gem
Initial Action:
- Cost: -1 gem (immediate deduction)
- seenlich = 1 (locked for rest of day)
- Random roll: e_rand(1, 3) determines outcome
- Three possible results (33.3% each)
Outcome 1: Soul Gem Reward (33.3%)
Description:
- "`2reluctantly parting with one of your precious gemstones, you hand it to the lich."
- "`2Papery lips pull back to form a smile and he reaches into his robes.`n`n"
- Lich: "`3\"My thanks, spiritling. Take this,\" he says, and hands you a small, faintly glowing gem."
- "`3\"'Tis but a bauble, and I have no need for it.\"`n`n"
- "`2As you cradle the `4soul gem `2in your hands, the lich calmy walks away.`n`n"
Rewards:
- +1 gravefight (torment): "`&Your soul feels as if its capacity for torment has been increased.`n"
- +deathpower (4-10, random): e_rand(4, 10)
- Bellatrix favor: "`&You feel that Bellatrix is pleased.`n`0"
Value:
- Extra torment valuable (more graveyard fights)
- Deathpower boost (4-10 points decent gain)
- Bellatrix favor (lore acknowledgment)
- Best possible outcome (worth the gem)
Outcome 2: Tricked (33.3%)
Description:
- "`2You reluctantly part with one of your gems and hand it to the lich."
- "`2His paper-like lips pull back to form a smile and he gives a soft laugh.`n`n"
- Lich: "`3\"So foolish, these young folk,\" he says with a sneer and suddenly vanishes, his mocking laughter still faintly echoing in the chilled air.`n`n"
- "`2That horrid thing tricked you!"
- "`2No matter you conclude, as a desire for revenge takes hold in the core of your soul.`n`n"
Reward:
- +1 gravefight: "`&You gain a torment!`n`n"
- No deathpower (unlike Outcome 1)
- No Bellatrix favor
Analysis:
- Lich scammed you (took gem, gave minimal reward)
- Only benefit: +1 torment from revenge desire
- Lost 1 gem for very little
- Worst outcome (not worth the trade)
Outcome 3: Agonizing Incantation (33.3%)
Description:
- "`2With a bit of hesitation, you hand one of your precious gems to the lich."
- "`2He gives you a bemused smirk and begins muttering a soft incantation.`n`n"
- "`2Moments later, you feel a burning agony deep within your soul, and you cry out in absolute pain.`n`n"
- "`2After what seems an eternity, the lich finishes his incantation, and then vanishes in a swirl of smoke."
- "`2Fighting to get to your knees, you struggle to stay conscious."
- "`2Just as you open your mouth to curse the foul being, you hear his words echoing in your mind:`n`n"
- "\"Ye shall thank me when life once again embraces ye.\"`n`n"
Reward:
- +maxhitpoints: e_rand(1, 3) → 1-3 HP
- PERMANENT (no reset on newday/dragonkill)
- Message: "`#You've gained %s permanent %s!" (hitpoint/hitpoints)
Analysis:
- Painful but beneficial (HP gain)
- 1-3 permanent HP valuable long-term
- Cryptic message: "thank me when life embraces ye" (when resurrected/alive)
- Worth it if you get 3 HP (best roll)
- Moderate outcome (not amazing but decent)
Outcome Probability Table
| Outcome | Roll | Probability | Rewards |
|---|---|---|---|
| Soul Gem | 1 | 33.3% | +gravefight, +deathpower (4-10), Bellatrix favor |
| Tricked | 2 | 33.3% | +gravefight only (revenge) |
| Incantation | 3 | 33.3% | +1-3 permanent max HP |
Strategy Guide
Should You Give Gem?:
- Expected Value:
- 33% best outcome (gravefight + deathpower 4-10)
- 33% worst outcome (gravefight only)
- 33% moderate outcome (1-3 permanent HP)
- Worst case: 1 gem → 1 gravefight (bad trade)
- Best case: 1 gem → gravefight + deathpower 10 (great trade)
- Average: Usually worth it (2 of 3 outcomes decent)
When to Give Gem:
- Have spare gems (not desperate for them)
- Want extra torments (graveyard fighter)
- Need deathpower boost
- Permanent HP valuable to you
- Willing to gamble (33% chance of bad outcome)
When to Decline:
- Low on gems (can't afford to lose one)
- Don't use graveyard (gravefights useless)
- Risk-averse (guaranteed safe option)
- Saving gems for other uses (lodge, etc.)
Optimal Play:
- Give gem if you have 2+ spare (cost affordable)
- All outcomes give at least +1 gravefight (minimum value)
- 66% chance of getting gravefight + bonus (deathpower or HP)
- Permanent HP especially valuable long-term
- Generally worth the gamble unless gem-poor
Once Per Day Mechanic
seenlich Preference:
- Pref: seenlich (bool, default 0)
- Set to 1 when you give gem (outcome 1, 2, or 3)
- NOT set when you decline (can re-encounter if refuse)
- NOT set if you have no gems (lich walks away)
Event Weight Logic:
- If seenlich = 1: Return weight 0 (no encounter)
- If seenlich = 0: Return lichchance setting (default 50)
- Newday hook: seenlich → 0 (reset daily)
Implications:
- Can only give gem once per day
- Can decline multiple times (keeps re-appearing until you give gem)
- If no gems, can encounter again later when you have gems
- Designed to prevent gem-farming (only 1 gamble/day)
Admin Configuration
Settings:
- lichchance: Chance of encountering lich? (int, default 50)
- Higher = more common encounter
- Lower = rarer encounter
- 0 = effectively disabled (never appears)
- 100 = very common (50% of graveyard events)
Balancing:
- Default 50 = moderate frequency
- High setting (80+) = players encounter often (gem sink)
- Low setting (20-) = rare special event
- Once-per-day limit prevents exploitation regardless
Lore & Flavor
Character Design:
- Tall, bandaged, dark robes (classic lich appearance)
- Burning blue eyes (undead/magical)
- Sepulchral voice (grave-like, deep)
- Papery/emaciated features (mummified)
- Calls player "spiritling" (you're a ghost in graveyard)
Personality:
- Polite but ominous ("Fear me not")
- Condescending when declined ("What need have ye of riches here?")
- Mocking when tricks you ("So foolish, these young folk")
- Cryptic when helping ("Ye shall thank me when life embraces ye")
Motivations:
- Seeks gems "to extend magicks" (power source)
- Willing to trade favors (not purely malicious)
- 33% chance scams you (chaotic nature)
- May genuinely help (soul gem, HP incantation)
Limitations
- Once Per Day: Can only gamble one gem daily (prevents farming)
- Pure RNG: No skill/choice in outcome (33% each, no control)
- Gem Gate: Can't participate without gem (poor players excluded)
- Variable Rewards: Deathpower 4-10 and HP 1-3 ranges create unequal outcomes
- Graveyard Only: Only useful if you use graveyard (gravefights)
- No Explanation: Why does lich trick you 33%? (random cruelty unexplained)
Lich Encounter: where a tall bandaged undead spellcaster with burning blue eyes approaches you while you're sitting on a rock lamenting your ghostly fate in the graveyard and politely asks in a sepulchral voice "Fear me not, spiritling, I ask only a favor of ye, a gem I seek to extend my magicks, a favor I shall grant in return," and if you don't have any gems he immediately grunts his disgust and walks away like you're not worth his time, but if you do have gems you can either decline (he lectures you about not needing riches when you're dead then sighs and leaves) or give him one gem and roll a three-sided die: 33% chance he gives you a faintly glowing soul gem that increases your torment capacity by one gravefight plus 4-10 deathpower and earns Bellatrix's pleasure, 33% chance his papery lips pull back in a smile and he laughs "So foolish, these young folk" then vanishes with mocking laughter leaving you with only a revenge-fueled torment increase, or 33% chance he begins a soft incantation that causes burning agony deep within your soul for what seems an eternity until he vanishes in smoke whispering "Ye shall thank me when life once again embraces ye" and you gain 1-3 permanent maximum hitpoints, which means trading your precious gem to an undead wizard is basically playing Russian roulette except one chamber has treasure, one has a permanent stat boost with excruciating pain, and one just takes your gem while the lich trolls you.
