Friend Rank
Friend Rank takes the people you have chosen to call friends and sorts them, you included, into a strict descending order by Voldemort Encounters. It does not measure loyalty, kindness, or how reliably anyone replies to your owls. It measures one thing, ranks everyone on it, and posts the result in your character stats where you cannot avoid seeing it. This is the ranking layer that sits on top of the ordinary Friend List, which has its own FAQ. The Friend List is where you keep friends. Friend Rank is where you find out how you place among them.
What It Is
Every player on your Friend List, plus yourself, is placed in a single league table ordered by Voldemort Encounters (VEs, the game's term for dragonkills). The person with the most VEs is #1. You sit wherever your own VE count lands you. Locked accounts are quietly excluded from the count, having presumably encountered something worse than Voldemort.
The result is condensed to one line in your character stats, filed under the Friends category (an admin can rename the category), reading #rank of total (VEs). If you are first, the number turns gold. If you are not, it does not.
How Rank Is Earned
It is not earned through the friendship. It is earned through Voldemort. Your rank is simply how many of your friends have more Voldemort Encounters than you do, plus one:
- Rank = (number of friends with more VEs than you) + 1.
- Pool = every friend on your list + you.
- The only way up the table is to encounter Voldemort more often than the friends above you, or to befriend people who encounter him less. Both are valid. Neither is dignified.
Ties are handled with standard competition ranking: players with identical VE counts share the same rank, and the next distinct count skips ahead accordingly (two players tied at #1 are followed by a #3). Within a tie, names break alphabetically for display order only; the rank number stays shared.
When It Updates
Your rank is computed once per local day, at login, and then cached. The character-stats line you see for the rest of the day is reading that cached number, which is why it costs nothing to display on every single page. The figures stored are your rank, your friend-pool size, and the date they were last computed.
- Befriend or unfriend someone, or grind out a fresh batch of Voldemort Encounters, and the table does not move until your next day's first login.
- Until then you may be ranked against a friendship that no longer exists, which is arguably the most honest thing the feature does.
- If your Friend List is empty, there is nobody to rank against, so the rank and total reset to zero and the stats line does not appear at all.
What It Unlocks
Nothing. There are no rewards, no thresholds, no tier badges, and no prize for finishing first. What it offers instead is information, displayed and clickable:
- The charstats line reads
#rank of total (VEs). Rank #1 renders in gold; every other rank in plain white. The whole line is a link. - The full board opens when you click that line. It lists everyone on your friend list and you, ranked by VEs, with rank, name, and VE count in three columns. Your own row is bold and labeled (you) so there is no mistaking where you placed.
- Every other name on the board is a link to compose mail to that friend, which is a thoughtful way to let you congratulate, or quietly resent, the person directly above you.
- The board also links back to your Friend List and to your Mail.
The board is computed live each time you open it, using the exact same ranking rule as the cached stats line, so the two never disagree.
Requirements
Friend Rank requires the Friend List module to be active; it reads its pool straight from your friend list and has nothing to rank without it. If the Friend List is switched off, the board says so plainly and ranks no one.
Friend Rank: a feature that took the warm, unmeasurable thing two people share and gave it a number, a position, and a column. You are #4 of 9. Your friends know. The system computed it at dawn and will not reconsider until tomorrow.
