The Forest Arcade Portal
A Forbidden Forest special with two acts: first, a one-time discovery — somewhere off the beaten path, one of Madam Phlox's Arcade cabinets has gone feral. Find it once and it bolts a permanent portal to a nearby tree stump, giving you a standing shortcut from the forest straight to the Arcade — no trip to Hogsmeade required. After that, the same clearing periodically hosts a much less charming visitor: Cornelius Pratt the Third, self-appointed Arcade Duel Champion, who is not interested in your excuses.
Finding It
Like Florida Man, the Alien Encounter, and the Forest Fool, this is a random special event rolled while Look for Something to Kill, Go Slumming, or Go Thrillseeking in the Forbidden Forest — it competes for the same "Something Special!" slot as every other forest special, at the same base weight. It costs no forest turn to encounter, whichever way you answer it.
Before you've found the cabinet, this slot is always the discovery scene below. Once you have, the exact same slot keeps rolling — indefinitely, not just once more — but it now shows the Arcade Duel challenge instead. A module only gets one shot at this "Something Special!" slot, so discovery and the duel take turns occupying it rather than running side by side.
The Encounter
You trip over a moss-slicked cabinet wedged between two roots, still faithfully blinking INSERT KNUT TO CONTINUE to an audience of bowtruckles and one deeply satisfied niffler. A chewed brass plate reads Property of Madam Phlox's Hogsmeade Arcade — Unit 4 — DO NOT FEED THE CABINET.
- Investigate the Cabinet — evict the wildlife, and the cabinet's built-in Frequent Flyer charm (standard equipment on any unit away from home more than three days) bolts itself to the nearest stump. Permanent portal unlocked, plus a small gold reward (75 gold by default, configurable).
- Leave It to the Bowtruckles — walk away. No reward, no penalty, and the cabinet stays lost — you can stumble on it again another day.
The Portal
Once unlocked, every visit to the Forbidden Forest shows a permanent Arcade Portal link under a new "Curiosities" nav section, alongside Heal, Fight, and the rest of the forest options. Unlike walking into the Arcade from Hogsmeade, the portal doesn't show you the lobby menu — it shoves you straight into a randomly-chosen cabinet, every single time, even after you've found the cabinet a hundred times over. Same token cost, same forest-fight-equivalent gold and experience rewards documented on the Arcade's own guide page — you just don't get to pick which game.
When you're done (or you forfeit), you're sent back to the Forbidden Forest, not Hogsmeade — the portal is a detour from the forest, not a doorway into the rest of the Arcade. If you want the full lobby, the menu, and your choice of cabinet, walk into the Arcade from Hogsmeade the ordinary way instead.
The portal is permanent once found and survives from game day to game day — nothing resets it. If the Arcade module itself is ever deactivated, the portal link simply stops appearing until it's reactivated.
The Arcade Duel
Once the portal's unlocked, the forest's "Something Special!" slot for this event stops offering the discovery scene and starts, from time to time, offering a duel instead: a teenager in fingerless gloves and an oversized cloak is waiting by a folding card table, Cornelius Pratt the Third, who introduces himself as the Undisputed Champion of the cabinet you found and demands a rematch on the spot.
- Accept the Duel — throws you straight into a randomly-chosen cabinet, exactly like walking through the portal itself (same token cost, same rewards, same "you don't pick the game"). Beat your own personal best on whatever cabinet comes up and Cornelius, mortified, concedes on the spot — his boasted high score always turns out to be suspiciously exactly your prior record. Fall short (or forfeit) and he gets to gloat.
- Walk Away — no game, no penalty. Cornelius returns to polishing his scoreboard and waits for another day.
The duel doesn't hand out any reward of its own beyond the normal forest-fight-equivalent gold and experience the cabinet always pays out — the win or lose outcome is pure bragging-rights narration layered on top.
Somewhere in Hogsmeade, Madam Phlox is still filing the incident report for Unit 4. Nobody has yet told her it now also moonlights as a load-bearing tree portal, or that it has, apparently, acquired a fanbase.
