Finding Gems (Random Events)
Sometimes fortune smiles upon you as you wander through the Forbidden Forest or travel between locations. A glint catches your eye in the dirt, and suddenly you're one gem richer. It's not much, but hey, free money is free money.
Think of it as the wizarding world's version of finding a dollar on the sidewalk, except this dollar is worth actual in-game currency and can be used to bribe Aberforth or buy premium items.
How It Works
Finding gems is a completely passive random event that can trigger in two situations:
- Forest Fights - Random chance while fighting creatures in the Forbidden Forest
- Travel Events - Random chance while traveling between locations (Knight Bus, portkeys, etc.)
The Event Message
When you find a gem, you'll see:
`^Fortune smiles on you and you find a `%gem`^!`0
And just like that, your gem count increases by 1. No choices to make, no risks to take, just pure, unadulterated luck.
Event Probabilities
The module registers with two event hooks, each with different weights:
- Forest Events - Return weight of 100
- Travel Events - Return weight of 20
What does this mean in practice? The higher the weight, the more likely the event competes with other random events. However, the actual probability depends on how many OTHER events are registered for those hooks and their weights.
Translation: You'll probably see this event occasionally in the forest and rarely during travel. Don't hold your breath for constant gem showers.
Strategic Value
Let's be honest about the value proposition here:
Pros
- Free gems - Gems are valuable currency, and this gives you free ones
- No effort required - Completely passive income
- No risk - Can't lose anything from this event
- Scales with activity - More forest fights and travel = more chances
Cons
- Only 1 gem - Not exactly a windfall
- Random chance - Could go days without seeing it
- Competes with other events - Other random events might trigger instead
- Can't farm it - Purely luck-based, no way to improve odds
Bottom line: It's a nice surprise when it happens, but don't build your economic strategy around it.
Gem Value Reminder
For those new to the game or those who've forgotten why gems matter:
- Gem Shop - Premium items and services
- Bribing Aberforth - 1-3 gems for special Inn services (who's upstairs, color codes, specialty switching)
- Trading - Can sometimes trade gems to other players for gold or services
- Special Purchases - Various modules accept gems for exclusive items or abilities
- Resurrection - Some resurrection options cost gems
So while one gem isn't life-changing, it's also not worthless. Think of each find as saving yourself real money on donations (since gems are often purchased with real currency).
Maximizing Your Chances
Since finding gems is purely random, you can't directly increase your odds. However, you can increase your number of "rolls" by:
- Fighting More - More forest turns = more forest event chances
- Traveling More - Visit different locations, use the Knight Bus, travel to race cities
- Being Active - The more you play, the more events you'll see overall
- Patience - Eventually RNG will favor you (or not, that's how randomness works)
Basically: play the game normally, and gems will occasionally find their way into your pocket. Don't go out of your way to hunt for this event—it's not worth the effort.
Event History
Like all module events, finding gems is logged in your debug log:
found a gem in the dirt
You can check your debug log (if you have access) to see how many times this has triggered for you. It's oddly satisfying to count your free gems over time.
Comparison to Other Gem Sources
| Source | Gems | Cost/Effort | Reliability |
|---|---|---|---|
| Finding Gems (this event) | 1 | None (passive) | Random |
| Donations | Variable (100+ per $10) | Real money | Guaranteed |
| Daily Login Rewards | Variable | Just logging in | Consistent |
| Special Events | Variable | Event participation | Seasonal |
| Achievements | Variable | Completing goals | One-time |
As you can see, finding gems randomly is the least efficient source, but it's also the only one that's completely free and completely passive. Every little bit helps.
Common Questions
Q: Can I find more than 1 gem at once?
A: No. This event always gives exactly 1 gem. If you want more, you'll need the event to trigger multiple times.
Q: Does my level affect how often I find gems?
A: No. It's pure random chance regardless of character level, stats, or any other factor.
Q: Can I find gems in PvP?
A: No. This event only triggers in forest fights and travel events, not during PvP combat.
Q: Does alignment or race affect gem finding?
A: No. Everyone has the same chance regardless of character choices.
Q: Is there a daily limit on how many gems I can find?
A: No daily limit. If you're incredibly lucky, you could theoretically find multiple gems in one day. More realistically, you'll find one every few days at most.
Q: Can I turn off this event if I don't want it?
A: Why would you want to turn off free gems? But no, there's no way to disable it anyway. Just accept your good fortune when it happens.
Q: Does the gem go to my inventory or straight to my gem count?
A: It goes directly to your gem count ($session['user']['gems']++). No inventory management needed.
