Dementor Encounter
Forest event (100 base chance). Encounter a Dementor. Cast "Expecto Patronum" to fight it off. Success/failure determined by spirits stat roll. Success (roll 5-7): gain 100 XP (configurable). Partial success (roll 4): lose 10% HP and 5 turns but survive. Failure (roll 0-3): Dementor's Kiss → instant death. -1 turn cost to attempt spell.
The Encounter
While searching the forest, you come face-to-face with a Dementor. As it closes in, you put your wand at the ready and yell "EXPECTO PATRONUM!" to cast the spell. Outcome determined by random roll
The Roll Mechanic
Roll Range: (spirits + 2) to 7
Spirits Stat Impact:
- spirits = 0: roll 2-7 (high failure chance)
- spirits = 1: roll 3-7 (medium failure chance)
- spirits = 2: roll 4-7 (low failure chance)
- spirits = 3+: roll 5-7 (guaranteed at least partial success)
Higher spirits stat = better minimum roll = safer encounter.
Outcomes
Success (Roll 5, 6, or 7):
- You successfully cast your patronus!
- Dementor repelled
- Gain 100 experience (default expgain setting)
- No HP loss, no turn loss
- Safe outcome
Partial Success (Roll 4):
- Thin, silvery mist flows from wand tip
- Not a full patronus, but enough to repel Dementor
- You escape but are weakened
- Lose: 10% of current HP
- Lose: 5 forest turns to recover
- Message: "You lose some hitpoints and take 5 forest turns to recover"
Failure (Roll 0, 1, 2, or 3):
- Patronus not strong enough
- Dementor pushes back its hood
- Dementor's Kiss: soul sucked from body
- DEATH: You die instantly
- Wake up in Shades (graveyard)
- Standard death penalties apply (XP loss, gold loss)
Turn Cost
Attempting the spell costs -1 forest turn regardless of outcome. If you partially succeed, you lose an additional 5 turns (6 total).
Spirits Stat
The encounter uses `$session['user']['spirits']` stat. This stat is rarely modified in base game but can be affected by:
- Other modules that grant/remove spirits
- Special items or buffs
- Quest rewards
- Death/resurrection (spirits might reset)
Most players have spirits=0 by default, making this encounter dangerous.
Module Naming Confusion
Module Name: "Death Eater Encounter"
Actual Encounter: Dementor (not Death Eater)
Why?: Likely original plan was Death Eater fight, but implementation changed to Dementor encounter. Module file/name never updated. Death Eaters are dark wizards; Dementors are soul-sucking creatures. Completely different HP lore.
Harry Potter Lore
Dementors: Dark creatures that feed on human happiness, leaving victims with only worst memories and depression. Guarded Azkaban prison.
Expecto Patronum: Charm that conjures a Patronus (spirit guardian) to repel Dementors. Requires happy memories and advanced magic skill.
Dementor's Kiss: Dementor sucks out victim's soul, leaving body alive but soulless. Fate worse than death in HP universe.
Spirits Stat as Power: Higher spirits = stronger happy memories = better Patronus = higher success chance. Makes thematic sense.
Strategy
Check Your Spirits: View character stats. If spirits ≤ 1, this encounter is 57%+ chance to die (rolls 0-3 out of 2-7 or 3-7).
Spirits = 0 Math: Roll 2-7 range. Rolls 2-3 = death (33%). Partial at 4 (17%). Success at 5-7 (50%). Not great odds.
Spirits = 3+ Safety: Roll 5-7 guaranteed. Always at least full success. Find ways to increase spirits before forest trips.
Turn Management: -1 turn to attempt, -5 more if partial. Budget 6 turns lost if low spirits.
Avoid If Weak: If spirits = 0 and you're at high level (expensive death), consider fleeing if module allows (code doesn't show flee option—might be forced).
XP Reward: 100 XP flat (not scaled). Good reward at low levels, mediocre at high levels.
Dementor Encounter: where your ability to think happy thoughts determines whether you gain XP or lose your soul. No pressure.
