Death Outcome Analysis

Why Death?:

  • Win "under 7 moves" = too fast, suspicious
  • Warrior's jaw drops (shocked/impressed)
  • Offers handshake (false sportsmanship)
  • Uses handshake to lift you (trap)
  • Slams into tree (execution)
  • "completely shattered their skull" (graphic death)

Comparison to Other Forest Deaths:

  • 12.5% death rate is HIGH for forest event
  • Most forest events: 0-5% death risk
  • Brothers in Arms: 1/8 games = death
  • No skill/stat check to avoid (pure RNG)
  • Makes this one of deadliest forest encounters

Brothers in Arms: where you encounter a wandering warrior carrying a mysterious small briefcase in the Forbidden Forest and he politely asks if you'd like to play a game of chess, and if you accept he describes a heated match where he takes your knight but you capture his queen, and then the game randomly resolves via eight equally-probable outcomes including full HP heal, three different strength companion buffs ranging from +5% to +25% attack for twenty rounds, cops appearing from bushes to steal the warrior's gold and give you some, losing gold or gems or charm because the old man punches you, getting pike-stabbed in the back after a stalemate, or—and this is the really fun one—winning SO CONVINCINGLY in under seven moves that the warrior offers a congratulatory handshake then uses that handshake to lift you into the air and slam you into a tree with sufficient force to completely shatter your skull resulting in instant death and a server-wide news announcement about your grizzly demise. That's a 12.5% chance (one in eight) of dying from accepting a friendly chess match, making this one of the deadliest forest encounters in the game, though you can always decline the offer and merely get hit in the head with a rock for one experience point which seems like the vastly superior option unless you're a gambling addict.
