Bee Hive
Forest random event (100% base chance but rare trigger frequency). Discover bee hive hanging from tree branch. Break it open for honey. 50% chance sweet honey gives +2 turns (energy burst). 50% chance angry bees chase you and you lose 2 turns (exhaustion). Pure coin flip.
The Event
You discover a bee hive hanging from a low branch of a tree. The hive appears inactive with no bees flying around. You decide to see if there's any honey inside.
There's no choice here—you automatically break open the hive. The outcome is determined by RNG.
Outcome 1: Sweet Honey (50% Chance)
"You discover a bee hive hanging from a low branch of a tree. Seeing it is no longer active, you decide to see if there is any honey inside. Breaking it open, you see some honey and decide to taste it. The honey is sweet and gives you a burst of energy!"
Result: +2 turns
Effect: Free forest fights, more exploration, more XP/gold grinding potential
Outcome 2: Angry Bees (50% Chance)
"You discover a bee hive hanging from a low branch of a tree. Seeing no bees flying around, you decide to see if there is any honey inside. As you break open the hive, several angry bees chase after you. You run as swiftly as you can!"
Result: -2 turns (if you have at least 2 turns remaining)
Safety: If you have fewer than 2 turns, you don't lose any (can't go below 0)
Effect: Lost forest fights, wasted encounter
The Probability
The code uses a configurable percentage setting (default 50%) to determine sweet honey vs. angry bees. If random roll ≤ percentage, you get honey (+2 turns). If random roll > percentage, you get chased (-2 turns).
Default 50% setting means perfect coin flip: equally likely to gain or lose 2 turns.
Expected Value
Average Outcome: (50% × +2 turns) + (50% × -2 turns) = 0 turns expected value
Translation: On average, this event does nothing. It's neutral EV. Pure variance generator.
Variance: High variance. You either gain or lose 2 turns (40% of daily allowance if you have 10 turns). Big swings for a random event.
Strategy
Can't Avoid It: There's no choice when you encounter the hive. You automatically break it. Cross your fingers and hope for honey.
Turn Safety: If you're down to your last 1-2 turns of the day and encounter this, the downside is capped (can't lose more turns than you have), but you can still gain +2. Slightly positive skew when low on turns.
Math: Expected value is zero. Don't plan around this event. It's just random luck.
Comparison to Other Turn Events
Other events that affect turns:
- Seth's Treasure (Fairy): Guaranteed +25 turns for finding treasure (super rare)
- Unicorn: +2-3 turns for honoring mystical creature
- Beehive: 50/50 for ±2 turns
- Whomping Willow: Can lose turns fighting tree
Beehive is the most balanced (neutral EV) turn-affecting event.
Bee Hive: nature's slot machine. Sometimes you get honey. Sometimes you get chased by insects. Such is life in the Forbidden Forest.
