Aragog Encounter

Forest encounter with Aragog the Acromantula (giant spider) and his spider children. Multiple decision points: follow silk trail, make noise, retreat, fight spiders, talk to Aragog, or freeze in fear. Outcomes include spider venom debuff (venomstrength setting, default 5 HP/round for venomduration 15 rounds, venomchance 75% when bitten), Ford Anglia rescue (carboost +20% speed buff for carturns 15 rounds), survival rewards (goldreward 300 + gemreward 2), spider venom immunity buff (spiderbuff +15% attack for buffturns 10 rounds), or death. Venom treatment available at Hospital Wing or emergency antidote (antidotecost 150 gold). Venom progresses at newday: mild pain (0-30%), greenish skin/nausea (30-60%), severe swelling/black veins (60-90%), hallucinations/blackened area (90%+). Ford Anglia exploration mini-game (5 locations to search in car). 100% event weight, complex multi-file encounter system. Where you meet the canonical giant spider from Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, and depending on whether you're polite or aggressive you either get bitten by his hungry children and poisoned with venom that slowly turns you into a green hallucinating mess, rescued by Ron's dad's enchanted flying car that's been living feral in the forest, or you successfully fight off the spiders and loot their corpses for gold.

Location & Access

Where: Forest event hook. 100% event weight (always triggers when selected). Complex multi-stage encounter with branching paths.

Module Structure: Uses multiple sub-files in modules/aragogencounter/ directory for different encounter paths (aragog_initial.php, aragog_follow.php, aragog_noise.php, aragog_retreat.php, aragog_fight.php, aragog_talk.php, aragog_freeze.php, aragog_car.php, aragog_antidote.php, aragog_hospital.php).

Initial Encounter

Discovery: You find thick silk webbing in the forest. Massive spider silk trail leading deeper into the woods.

Aragog's Lair: Following the trail leads to Aragog, ancient blind Acromantula. Massive spider, size of a small elephant. Surrounded by hundreds of offspring (smaller but still giant Acromantulas).

Your Options:

  • Follow the silk trail — Investigate deeper (encounter Aragog)
  • Make noise to scare them off — Aggressive approach (provoke spiders)
  • Retreat quietly — Back away slowly (safe escape option)
  • Fight the spiders — Attack immediately (combat)
  • Try to talk to Aragog — Diplomatic approach (Parseltongue not required, Aragog speaks English)
  • Freeze in fear — Paralyzed by terror (spiders approach)

Spider Venom Debuff

How You Get Poisoned: When bitten by Acromantulas (75% chance per bite, venomchance setting). Occurs in combat or when spiders attack paralyzed/cornered targets.

Venom Effects:

  • Combat Damage: Lose venomstrength HP per round (default: 5 HP/round)
  • Duration: venomduration rounds (default: 15 rounds of combat)
  • Debuff Name: "spidervenom" buff
  • Persistent: Continues between sessions, affects all combat

Venom Progression (Newday Messages):

  • Stage 1 (0-30% progress): "The spider venom causes a mild throbbing pain and occasional dizziness."
  • Stage 2 (30-60%): "The venom's effects are intensifying. Your skin has taken on a greenish hue, and you're experiencing cold sweats and nausea."
  • Stage 3 (60-90%): "The Acromantula venom is now causing severe pain. Your affected limb has swollen to twice its normal size, and dark veins are visible under your skin."
  • Stage 4 (90%+): "The venom has reached an advanced stage. You're experiencing hallucinations, and the affected area has turned a disturbing shade of black. You need treatment IMMEDIATELY!"

Venom Treatment

Hospital Wing: If poisoned, village hook adds navigation option "Visit Madam Pomfrey" → runmodule.php?module=aragogencounter&op=hospital

Madam Pomfrey's Treatment:

  • "Acromantula venom! What were you doing in the Forbidden Forest? Never mind, don't answer that. I don't want to know."
  • Bubbling potion "smells like a mixture of rotten eggs and burnt rubber"
  • "Drink this. All of it." — Tastes "like someone liquefied a pair of old socks that had been marinating in troll sweat"
  • Venom neutralized immediately (strip_buff("spidervenom"))
  • HP restored to 75% of max
  • "You'll live, though I can't say the same for your taste buds after that potion. Next time, perhaps consider NOT antagonizing giant venomous spiders?"

Emergency Antidote: Available during encounter for antidotecost gold (default: 150). Can be used mid-encounter to remove venom before leaving forest.

Ford Anglia Rescue

When It Appears: Random chance during dangerous spider encounters. The enchanted blue Ford Anglia that Ron Weasley crashed into the Whomping Willow in Chamber of Secrets, now living feral in the Forbidden Forest.

Rescue Sequence: Car bursts through trees, honking horn, headlights blazing. Doors fly open. "GET IN!" (car is sentient/enchanted). You dive in, car speeds away, spiders pursue but car escapes.

Speed Buff Reward:

  • Buff Name: "Ford Anglia Speed" (carboost setting)
  • Effect: +20% speed/attack buff (default carboost: 20%)
  • Duration: carturns rounds (default: 15 combat rounds)
  • Wearoff Message: "The adrenaline from the Ford Anglia chase fades."

Car Exploration Mini-Game: Once rescued, you can search the car (once per day per location). 5 exploration locations with aragog_explored_[location] prefs:

  • Seat cushions (aragog_explored_cushions): Find lost items, coins, perhaps a chocolate frog card
  • Glove compartment (aragog_explored_glove): Maps, old Weasley family items, emergency supplies
  • Sun visor (aragog_explored_visor): Hidden compartments, more lost items
  • Floor mats (aragog_explored_floor): Dirt, debris, possible treasure
  • Dashboard (aragog_explored_dashboard): Controls, magical modifications, car secrets

Exploration Reset: All exploration flags reset at newday (can search car again if encounter repeats).

Combat & Survival Outcomes

Fighting Spiders: If you choose to fight or provoke the spiders, combat ensues. Acromantulas are strong opponents. 75% chance of being bitten and poisoned per successful spider hit.

Survival Rewards (if you defeat spiders or escape successfully):

  • Gold: goldreward setting (default: 300 gold) — Looted from spider lair
  • Gems: gemreward setting (default: 2 gems) — Found in webbing/corpses

Spider Venom Immunity Buff (rare reward, if you survive multiple spider bites):

  • Buff Name: "Spider Venom Immunity"
  • Effect: +spiderbuff% attack (default: +15% attack)
  • Duration: buffturns combat rounds (default: 10 rounds)
  • Lore: Your body has developed resistance to Acromantula venom, making you stronger

Talking to Aragog

Diplomacy Option: You can attempt to reason with Aragog. He speaks English (raised by Hagrid). Blind but intelligent.

Aragog's Dialogue: May reference Hagrid ("My friend Hagrid"), his age ("I am old, older than the forest itself"), his hunger ("My children are always hungry"), or his loyalty to Hagrid.

Possible Outcomes:

  • Peaceful Resolution: Aragog allows you to leave if you mention Hagrid or show respect
  • Conditional Release: "I will not harm you, but I cannot vouch for my sons and daughters"
  • Attack Anyway: If you insult Aragog or threaten him, offspring attack

Retreat Option

Quiet Retreat: Safest option. Back away slowly without making sudden movements. Spiders are less likely to attack if you don't provoke them.

Success: You escape the spider lair safely. No rewards, but no combat or venom either. Conservative but smart choice.

Strategy

Risk Assessment:

  • Retreat: Safest (no rewards, no danger)
  • Talk to Aragog: Moderate risk, possible peaceful resolution
  • Fight: High risk (75% venom chance), high reward (300 gold + 2 gems)
  • Freeze: Very high risk (spiders attack paralyzed target)

Recommended Approach:

  • Low HP/unprepared: Retreat immediately
  • Strong combatant: Fight for gold/gems, keep antidote gold ready (150)
  • Roleplay: Talk to Aragog (canon character interaction)
  • Risk-averse: Retreat (no upside but zero downside)

Venom Management:

  • If poisoned in combat, use emergency antidote (150 gold) immediately
  • If can't afford antidote, retreat and visit Hospital Wing ASAP
  • Don't let venom progress past Stage 2 (greenish skin) — get treatment
  • Hallucinations (Stage 4) mean you waited too long, get to Madam Pomfrey NOW

Canon Connections

Aragog in Harry Potter:

  • Acromantula (giant spider species from Borneo)
  • Raised by Hagrid as a student at Hogwarts
  • Accused of being the monster in the Chamber of Secrets (falsely)
  • Fled to Forbidden Forest, established colony
  • Married to Mosag, hundreds of offspring
  • Blind but can sense through vibrations
  • Dies in Half-Blood Prince (Hagrid holds funeral)
  • Harry and Ron encountered in Chamber of Secrets, saved by Ford Anglia

Ford Anglia in Canon:

  • 1962 Ford Anglia 105E, turquoise/blue
  • Owned by Arthur Weasley, enchanted illegally
  • Can fly, become invisible, expand interior (magic enhancements)
  • Ron and Harry flew it to Hogwarts in Chamber of Secrets (missed train)
  • Crashed into Whomping Willow, Ron's wand broken
  • Car fled into Forbidden Forest, became feral/wild
  • Rescued Harry and Ron from Aragog's spiders later that year
  • Still in forest (car has developed own intelligence/personality)

Module Accuracy: This module recreates the iconic Chamber of Secrets scene where Harry and Ron meet Aragog and are rescued by the Ford Anglia.

Aragog Encounter: where you stumble into the lair of a giant spider the size of an elephant who was Hagrid's childhood pet and is now the patriarch of a forest full of man-eating offspring, and you can either try to reason with him (he's surprisingly articulate for a giant spider), fight his children and risk getting poisoned with venom that progressively turns your skin green then black while you hallucinate, retreat like a sensible person, or get lucky and have Ron Weasley's dad's enchanted flying car burst through the trees to rescue you because apparently that car has been living feral in the forest for years and occasionally saves people, which honestly raises more questions than it answers.
